Is Turkey safe for solo female travelers?

Traveling solo as a woman in Turkey is generally safe. Large cities like Istanbul and Ankara, as well as tourist hubs such as Antalya and Cappadocia, are typically welcoming to foreign visitors. However, like many places, it demands a certain level of consciousness and alertness, especially at night. Always be aware of your surroundings, maintain personal boundaries, and avoid secluded areas. It can be helpful to learn a few key phrases in Turkish, but most people in Turkey's tourist areas speak English.

I’ve spent 4 wonderful days in Istanbul in December! I was lucky with the weather, so all day I’ve walked and explored the city. Riding a ferry across the Bosphorus, feeding seagulls and drinking coffee right in the old church - an incredible experience! Wanna back one day!

Istanbul is a beautiful city. I was there with my Boyfriend and it felt quite Safe in the big places. Once you get into smaller streets some men Look weird at you Even of you are dressed very modest. The Nightlife and the Food is incredible good and I can definetly recommend a shiptour on the Bosporus.

I loved the city. The most important thing is that the city is HUGE. You need months to see the whole. People are the friendliest I've ever met. Drank tea like an addiction. Mosques are beautiful, but some tourist attractions can be hell expensive.

Bursa

In general it is a very very conservative city. So you won’t be attacked but will be under constant pressure of unwanted attention. People will ask you where are you from like 1000000 times per day and won’t respect your boundaries. They mostly won’t respect your culture or values and try to teach you how to live “properly”. If you are wearing something too different or have different looks they will gossip about you right in front of you. Be careful with money - they don’t steal, they scam you into believing something is way more expensive than it is. Yildirim is definitely not a place to...

It’s a bit boring compared to its neighbor Istanbul, but still really a good place to enjoy. Especially if you love nature, it has really great places. But for a night out, i don’t recommend being alone as a woman. Some people are tend to be “too friendly” or close minded around here.

Istanbul

Overall, it's a city very accustomed to tourists. The locals are very helpful. However, of course, you can find all kinds of people everywhere, so avoid going to secluded areas late at night if possible. Be careful with your belongings in tourist areas.

About me

Hey, I’m Beyza. I’m 19, obsessed with traveling, and currently on a mission: 19 countries before I turn 20. I’m spending my gap year exploring the world while collecting ideas for my future social enterprise. Yes, I travel like I’m running a field research project. In September 2026, I’m planning to start university in either Italy or the US. I love meeting new people, spontaneous plans, getting lost (and then pretending it was part of the plan), and analyzing every city like a case study. Ig: Wispybeyza
