Solo Female Travel in Tunisia

Tunisia, an idyllic blend of Mediterranean beachfronts and Arabic culture, is perched on the northernmost point of Africa. Known for its stunning landscapes, this country offers a variety in its geography; from the sun-drenched coasts of Hammamet and Sousse, to the arid yet beautiful Sahara Desert, and not forgetting the verdant, mountainous regions of the North-West. Tunisia's long history, influenced by many civilizations is evident in its diverse architecture, from the impressive Roman amphitheater in El Jem, to the Islamic landmarks in its bustling capital, Tunis. Enthusiasts of the Star Wars franchise also frequently visit the country to travel to the sandy dunes of Tataouine, an original filming location of the famous series. Moreover, the intriguing labyrinthine souks, rich aroma of spices, and the world-class craftsmanship on display make Tunisia a perfect destination for culture and history lovers.

Is Tunisia good for solo travel?

Safety:

Safety:Moderate

Tunisia is generally safe but demands a certain level of caution. Solo female travelers should adhere to cultural norms and dress conservatively to avoid unwanted attention. While locals are usually friendly, instances of harassment have been reported. It is advisable to rely on private transport and avoid isolated areas especially during the night.
Transport:

Transport:Moderate

Tunisia's transportation network is reasonably developed, with larger cities well-served by buses, metros, and taxis. However, in more rural areas, public transportation can be less reliable and may not follow a definite schedule. While most locals are friendly and helpful, language barriers can pose a problem when trying to get directions.
Things to do:

Things to do:Interesting

Tunisia offers a wide range of activities that cater to various interests making it compelling for solo female travelers. Its rich historical heritage includes the ruins of ancient Carthage and the stunning architecture of the Medina of Tunis, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As a northernmost country in Africa, it boasts of beautiful Mediterranean beaches perfect for relaxation. Adventure seekers can explore the incredible Sahara Desert landscapes. Additionally, the country's diverse food scene is also worth exploring. Yet, it must be noted that while Tunisia is generally safe, it's essential to exercise caution and respect local customs and dress codes, particularly when visiting more conservative, rural regions.
Food:

Food:Above average

Tunisian cuisine offers a great variety of dishes, infused with flavors from different cultures due to its historical connection with various civilizations. From the national dish couscous, to the popular Berber dish brik, or the seafood from the coastal towns, Tunisia has a lot for your palate to explore. Spices are used in moderation, creating well-balanced meals that aren't overly spicy. However, the options for diverse international cuisine can be limited, particularly in smaller towns or rural areas.
Budget:

Budget:Affordable

Tunisia is quite pocket-friendly for travelers, especially when it comes to accommodations and local cuisine which can be found at reasonable prices. Public transport is also very affordable. However, certain tourist attractions require entrance fees. Nonetheless, you can have a quality travel experience without breaking the bank.

Overall i think it s safe. I didn’t walk alone at night so i can’t comment on that. There is a lot of activities that you can do like enjoying a hike in the nature, doing cultural activities like visiting museums, the old town to enjoy arabic architecture, visiting mosques etc. The beach is very clean and peaceful. Overall very nice expensive at a low budget. Also people were super friendly and very welcoming.

I stayed in the Medina of Tunis at a Palace Hotel. Felt like a queen. The room was glorious. Next to the accommodation was a traditional Hamam for local women. Beautiful experience. I loved to walk around the markets, bazaar. Tunisian food is delicious and Harira spices my favorite. I love the Jazmin oil for the body and the oil perfumes. I felt very safe really and the people are so lovely and welcoming.

Solo travel experience

I've been to Tunisia twice on my own and I traveled around by taxi. I felt safe. I got some silly pick-up lines from teenagers on the beach, but a firm refusal was enough to fend them off.

Solo travel experience

When I walked alone on the beaches, guys would approach me, either wanting to chat, take a photo, or straight up propositioning sex but I didn't feel in danger. I was more discouraged by the fact that it was the same thing over and over again and it was hard to fend them off. Apart from that had a great time in Tunisia.

Solo travel experience

My solo trip to Tunisia was okay, but many of my tours got cancelled. I'm hoping to go again and have a better experience. The pirate ship was fun, and the hotel staff were amazing. I would like to see more of Tunisia. I plan on visiting again in November 2023.

Favorite trip Ive taken, went with an organized tour. So much to see and do, fantastic food. Extremely inexpensive. The people are very nice and helpful, in my experience. Did get playful comments on my appearance but no harrassment or catcalling. Would suggest going with an organized tour if you want to see the whole country as I dont think they have great tourist infrastructure (when compared to Morocco and Egypt for example)

Solo travel experience

I spent a weekend alone in Tunisia and I visited Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Testour, and Dougga and had a great time. I stayed in an Airbnb with a local family, and an experienced guide helped me navigate the cities and surroundings. I always felt safe. The people were so nice. It's a pity I couldn't stay there longer.

Group travel experience

I recently returned from Tunisia and it was fantastic. I feel that it is safer there and slightly more developed than in Egypt. In Tunis, I recommend visiting Medina, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said, which are spectacular. Hammamet has beautiful beaches. In Sousse, the Medina is nice, and the Dar Essid museum is really worth a visit. In Monastir, I visited the Medina and Riad. I also went on a two-day desert tour, which was the best decision. I visited the impressive El Jem, Berber houses in Matmata, Douz at the gates of the Sahara, and the amazing oasis Chebika. The food is amazing, the people are very friendly and you can travel by taxi. Everything is negotiable. The rule is that you can cut the initial price in half and start from there. I love their culture, history, and heritage and highly recommend a visit.

Solo travel experience

26 years since my last holiday, I finally plucked up the courage to so my first ever solo holiday - to Hammamet in Tunisia. The hotel chosen was Le Sultan. Literally less than 20 steps to the beautiful soft sand and blue warm sea!!! The staff so welcoming! From the receptionist, to waiters , bar staff and housekeeping ladies. I went all inclusive for 7 days. The food was in abundance. The gorgeous snack bar made lovely panini's and crepes from 3:30pm for a couple of hours. Delicious!! . Other guests were from varied countries. UK, Prague Germany, Paris, Scotland, Essex, Manchester.... all polite and some I've made life long friendships with.. It genuinely changed my life and myself beyond words could describe. I even met a lady from Female Solo Traveller from Facebook, where we hired a driver for the day and visited for instance El Jem where the impressive Roman Emphitheatre is there. I even rode a camel there. I do thoroughly recommend Tunisia, so much so, I'm trying my hardest to visit again in Dec for 3 days, then 11 days in May 🫶🇹🇳

Is Tunisia safe for women?

Emna

Emna

Actually , Tunisia is a safe country especially when you're with someone and people are so welcoming ! Tunisia is considered safe for travelers due to its stable political situation, relatively low crime rates, and a strong focus on tourism security measures. The government works to ensure the safety of tourists by implementing security protocols and monitoring popular tourist destinations. But you should also be aware as in any country of strangers.
