I love visiting Groningen - I absolutely recommend renting a bike to get the actual local authentic experience. The city museum is just fantastic, food options are diverse and exciting, lots of nice bars and cofee places, especially in the city centre and close to Rijksuniversity. The park is also a must see, and coffeeshops are safe also for a solo travellers that wants to try!

So far so good! Still got a few days to spare, but I've seen some of the city and explored a bit on Mt own without any problems.

Really safe city, live here for my whole life and never ever feeld not-safe. Its a very busy student city, so you are basically never alone on the streets. The night life is very nice! You have good places vor every kind of person!
Posted: June 25, 2025Groningen is very safe. I don't feel uncomfortable walking alone at night but I am quite masculine and have short hair. However the night life (partying) is a little unsafe because people forgot how to behave after COVID-19. Groningen is also one of the first cities that sell 100% legal government weed so drug crimes are really low but there are a lot of people smoking it in public
