Is Alexandria good for solo travel?

Safety:

Safety:Safe

Alexandria is generally safe for solo female travelers. It has well-policed tourist areas and locals tend to be friendly and helpful in most cases. However, it's still important to remain cautious, especially at night as you would in any other city. Some women report occasional instances of verbal harassment, but it's typically not physical. It's recommended to dress modestly respecting local customs to avoid unwanted attention. Always take reputable transportation options and avoid isolated areas.
Transport:

Transport:Moderate

Alexandria offers several modes of transportation, including trams, taxis, and buses. However, navigating can be a bit challenging due to often heavy traffic and the city layout. It's recommended to understand basic Arabic phrases and have a reliable map. Nevertheless, locals are usually willing to help with directions, which adds to the overall experience.

Things to do:Interesting

Alexandria's charming second city, is richly endowed with a colorful history, multifaceted cultures, and striking architecture. Its Mediterranean shores and antique ambiance captivate a wanderer's curiosity. From exploring the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which is daringly modern to the ancient Roman theater, and the legendary Montaza Palace, an abundance of activities are on offer. Don't miss visiting Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa and Citadel of Qaitbay, which are truly wonders of the ancient world. However, be aware of the striking absence of 'Ancient Alexandria' since the old city is almost gone. Parts of the city might seem neglected, but this place certainly attracts those with a deep interest in history and culture.

Food in Alexandria offers a delightful window into the diverse gastronomy of the Mediterranean coast. You can embark on a culinary journey that includes an array of seafood dishes, street food like falafels and koshary, as well as sweet delicacies such as baklava. However, the options for international cuisine might be slightly limited. Always keep an eye out for the freshness of seafood.
Budget:

Budget:Affordable

Alexandria is relatively affordable for solo female travelers. Accommodation, food, and transportation costs tend to be low. However, entrance fees to top attractions, like the Catacombs and the Library, can add up. While most expenses are fairly manageable, be prepared for occasional tourist price hikes.

Went during the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood (unsure if it was 12’ or 13’) nonetheless I was not a fan. I am tan Latina and I found myself feeling unwelcomed in many circumstances. I recall my white roommate encouraging me to approach the natives while I was out and about on my own. I did just that and was met with many unkind faces. There were so many instances where the natives were simply awful i.e. unkind. I am not familiar with the climate of today — i.e. whether they continue to be close-minded, ignorant, colorist, and racist as POCs (which baffles me). But I have always empathized to many of my Arabic language exchange partners that I would not return.

Solo travel experience

In Alexandria, you should definitely visit the Alexandria Library, the Qaitbay Citadel, the Royal Jewelry Museum, the Greco-Roman Museum, and the Corniche promenade. Alexandria is known for its villas and cafes, as well as fresh seafood and Mediterranean atmosphere. Cafe Trianon is a place with excellent food and the atmosphere is incredible. Spend some time in Alexandria if you are looking for rest. There are fewer tourists here than in Luxor, Aswan, or Cairo. Learn some Arabic during your stay, even though some people speak English, it is less common than in Upper Egypt and Cairo.
