Puerto Plata offers a rich cultural experience and beautiful beach views but it's essential to be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Like many tourist destinations, it experiences instances of petty crime. Therefore, avoid venturing out late in the night alone and be conscious of personal belongings at all times. Utilize safe transportation options and avoid isolated areas. Most locals are friendly and hospitable, but as with all international travel, it's crucial to maintain vigilance. Having a basic understanding of Spanish could be beneficial as well.

Transport:Easy

Puerto Plata is quite navigable and visitor-friendly. You can move around mainly by walking if you remain in tourist areas and the town center. For longer distances, taxis and public transportation such as 'carros publicos' or 'guagua' buses are available. Be prepared to negotiate taxi prices before riding. Hiring a local guide could also be beneficial. However, keep in mind the language barrier may be challenging if you don't speak Spanish.

Puerto Plata offers a wide variety of activities for solo female travelers. This includes exploring impressively well-preserved 16th century fortresses, beautiful botanical gardens and engaging in adventurous activities like surfing, hiking and diving. Food lovers will have the opportunity to indulge in the local Dominican cuisine. The city has pristine beaches for relaxation, not to mention opportunities for water sports. It does require some caution regarding personal safety, like any travel destination, but is generally welcoming to solo travelers.

Food:Above average

Puerto Plata does an excellent job catering to a wide range of tastes. The local cuisine is vibrant and rich with unique flavors, highlighted by staples like Sancocho, Mangu, and fresh seafood. There is also a favourable amount of International food representation, allowing for a good blend of both local and foreign taste experiences. It may sometimes lack in vegetarian or vegan options, but overall, the diversity and quality are commendable.

Budget:Moderate

Puerto Plata is moderately budget-friendly. Although accommodation and food can be fairly affordable compared to other Caribbean destinations, certain activities and transportation may add to the overall cost. Be aware that while many resorts offer all-inclusive packages, this can limit the opportunity to explore local cuisine and experiences.

Solo travel experience

I went to Puerto Plata by myself and felt very unsafe. There was constant, incessant, and degrading catcalling even by the police themselves. As a solo female traveler, I’d advise against visiting Puerto Plata.
