Is The Hague Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

The Hague is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. Like any major city, it has areas that are more or less secure, but the crime rate is relatively low overall. Always use common sense, keep an eye on your belongings especially in crowded areas, and try to avoid walking alone in quiet or poorly lit areas late at night. The local police are friendly and helpful, and English is widely spoken. Public transport is also reliable and safe, and taxi services are regulated and can be trusted.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

The Hague is generally quite safe at night, especially in the well-lit and populated areas. Crime rate is comparatively lower than many other major European cities. It's suggested to stay in central areas where there are people around even late at night. Though, as in any city, it’s important to stay alert, avoid quiet and poorly lit streets especially when you're alone, and always be aware of your surroundings.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in The Hague is generally very safe. The trams and buses are regularly monitored and service is reliable. Most locals use public transportation for their everyday transport, including late hours. There might be occasional instances of pickpocketing or minor incidents, but these are quite rare. It's recommended to stay aware of your surroundings, especially during peak times when the trams or buses are crowded. Overall, it's an efficient, clean, and safe way to get around for a solo female traveler.

Street harassment:Low

The Hague, like most cities in the Netherlands, is generally safe and respectful towards women. Street harassment is not common and it is largely perceived as a comfortable and secure place for solo female travelers. It is recommended to remain aware of your surroundings regardless, as one would in any city around the world.

Petty crimes:Low

The Hague is generally safe and has a low risk of petty crimes such as pick-pocketing or bag-snatching, particularly when compared to other major European cities. However, caution should still be taken, especially in crowded places, public transport, and tourist hotspots.

Tap water:Very safe

The tap water in The Hague is known for its high quality and safety standards. It goes through rigorous controls and filtration processes that ensure it is pure and safe to drink straight from the tap. Environmentally friendly and economical, it is considered some of the cleanest and best tasting in the world.

Solo travel experience

I spent a week in The Hague last summer and I really liked it there. It's smaller and less crowded than Amsterdam, and cycling made me feel safe and comfortable (I was too nervous to try it on the day I was in Amsterdam).

Solo travel experience

The Hague was my favorite city. Amazing art museums, shops, historical buildings, very diverse. Close to Scheveningen beach, which was really worth visiting. I had mixed feelings about safety in this place.

We've been living here for 4 months and it feels like a very safe place to live, at least in the district we live in and the surroundings. Feels safe to venture out in the evening or night on a bike.

Small city. I live in the center and I feel safe and secure being alone during the night and biking. Is very international and most of people are in their own bubble and in their own business. When men talked to me in certain moments during the night, around night clubs or so, I never felt uncomfortable or insecure. I have found the space to set up limits and respected.
