Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Porto is generally very safe to explore at night. The city is well-lit and well-patrolled by local law enforcement, making it safe for solo female travelers. However, like any major city, it's important to remain vigilant, especially while walking alone. Stick to the main streets and avoid dimly lit or deserted areas. Public transportation is reliable and safe to use even at night. There have been very few cases of serious crimes reported in the city.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Porto, is generally safe, reliable, and convenient. This includes the metro, buses, trams, and trains that operate in the city. Incidences of crime on public transportation are low and the systems are well-maintained and well-used by locals. However, like any city, it's always prudent to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, particularly during off-peak times and at less busy stations.

Street harassment:Low

Porto as a whole, is a serene city with friendly locals. Street harassment is not a common factor here. Most locals are respectful, and while you might occasionally come across some unpleasant individuals, instances of street harassment are generally rare. It is advisable to stay vigilant, specially during night hours or in less crowded places.

Petty crimes:Low

Porto is quite safe for visitors. Petty crime such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, or mobile phone theft can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas, on public transportation, or in restaurants and cafes. However, it's far less common compared to major European cities. Applying a common-sense approach such as keeping your belongings secure and staying vigilant of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places, is usually sufficient to ensure a safe trip.

Tap water:Very safe

In Porto, tap water is safe to drink. The country has excellent water quality standards, provided by a well-maintained and efficient public water system. Locals and hordes of tourists drink it without any issues. Regardless, always stay updated with local advisories and if you are unsure or have a sensitive stomach, please consider using a filtered bottle or tablets.

Everything was very safe and friendly. Had zero local issues or trouble with transit. The weather was incredible, so dressed for their summer. Not a huge fan of frog legs, but try caramel (dolci) and cheese!

Solo travel experience

A beautiful city to walk around. Buildings, canal, artwork and shopping was unreal!! The pilgrim community was one full of people looking to share experiences and meet others. I felt safe walking alone during the day and early evening. There’s definitely a traveller nightlife culture in the city centre - so I never felt alone walking the streets, but I would definitely stay central rather than heading out to the suburbs at night. The public transport was decent but most of the city is walkable. I stayed in Selina hostel and the Central House. Both very secure and sociable. Highly recommend the visit if you want to avoid big tourist cities like Lisbon

Solo travel experience

Amazing place! I felt safe, the food was great, and the whole experience was excellent! The old buildings and history take your breath away. Artists on the streets and music played by musicians made me feel like I was inside a movie.

I felt very safe in Porto and walked around the city at night without any problems. Public transportation was always available, and uber/taxis were not so expensive.

In the center areas I believe it is a safe place, but usually we found some people selling drugs at night and there are some homeless people in the center. Walking at night is safer if you are not alone

Very very safe. Worst you might find is pickpocketing or being approached to buy drugs (they're not pushy at all, say no and move on). I'd reccommend standard safety for women - watch your drink, don't get too drunk, beware of your surroundings after dark.

In my opinion Porto is a safe city. Since young I use to walk alone at anytime morning, afternoon and evening, and at anytime I felt unsafe. Public transports like metro or bus are quite safe and accessible.

Porto its a really safe place for solo travel, its safe to go out at night but i always recommend being with someone who knows good places. Its safe to go to the beach alone and not being robbed or harassed, and if anything happen the portuguese people always try to help you.

Porto is a very safe city with low crime levels. As a woman living in Porto I always feel safe, even when walking alone at night. With tourism booming there are great places to socialize and great atmosphere. Although, as in any big city, is it important to always stay vigilant.

Couple travel experience

Such a cozy city, definitely enjoyed it more than Lisbon. There’s so much to do and see, and a lot of day trip opportunities. Also the food is really great, and you can go visit a wine yard. Maybe not the best place to go swimming though.
