How safe is Santa Cruz?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Santa Cruz, being a popular tourist destination, has good safety measures in place. However, like any urban area, it also has its share of crime. While most areas are relatively safe during the day, it is advisable to be extra cautious at night. Avoid isolated or dimly lit areas and try not to walk alone after darkness falls. Instead, use trustworthy transportation options and always let someone know about your whereabouts for better security.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Santa Cruz, including buses and taxis, is generally safe to use. The bus system, operated by Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District, is reliable and the drivers are professional. Taxi services and Uber drivers are mostly trustworthy and provide good service. However, as in any city, it's important to keep personal belongings close and stay vigilant at all times, especially during late hours or in less crowded areas.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Santa Cruz is generally a safe place with a friendly ambiance and laid-back culture. However, like any urban area, it's not immune to occasional incidents of unsolicited attention or bothersome behavior, especially in certain areas or during late-night hours. It is always wise to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, despite the rarity of major incidences.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Santa Cruz, being a popular tourist city in California, can sometimes be a target for petty crimes. Occurrences like pickpocketing, purse snatching, or minor vandalism may occur, particularly in crowded tourist areas or at night. However, it is not a widespread issue and by taking basic precautions like concealing personal belongings and avoiding walking alone in secluded areas at night, one can largely mitigate these risks.

Santa Cruz, California, USA is such a charming and wonderful place. It has the best of both worlds with mountains and redwood forests while also being on the beach. It’s perfect for hippies and surfers and music lovers. There is always something fun to do :)! Overall the safety is relatively safe although my car has been broken into twice and my friends’ bikes have been stolen. There are a lot of homeless people but for the most part they are harmless and sometimes friendly. I don’t fear walking around or generally existing in Santa Cruz. I love this town with all my heart.

Meet locals in Santa Cruz

Kathy

About Me

I am an athletic, adventuresome, young senior eager to travel again. Spent 2 1/2 years in Zambia as a Peace Corps Volunteer-turned 65 while serving. Met & worked with the kindest folks ever, including the youth. Now, finally, I plan to travel for my 75th BD. I want to make it to Morocco, then ferry across Gilbraltar, hang out a couple days along Mediterranean, head up to northern Spain into Portugal, walk some of Camino, & enjoy cultures: music, food, people, nature's beauty & peace. Looking for places to stay as I travel the roads-hostels & women hosts, small local inns...I am easy-going, friendly, love families, teens, & youth(tho I treasure quiet environments, midst the fun & laughter). Enough for now 😄
