How safe is Sacramento?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Sacramento, like any city, has areas that are safer than others. Generally, downtown and Midtown are populated with people almost all times of the day and night which helps in creating a safer environment. Also, public transport is reliable and California Highway Patrol monitors downtown regularly, which ensures safety to an extent. However, it is advisable to remain cautious, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid poorly lit or deserted areas at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Sacramento, California, is generally quite safe. The bus and light rail services, operated by Sacramento Regional Transit District, are largely reliable and secure, although like any city, caution should be practiced especially during night hours. There is a regular police and security presence, ensuring a generally safe environment for travel. Additionally, text alerts provide updates about delays or any security concerns.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Sacramento, being the capital city of California, is relatively safe for solo female travelers. Like any city, it has its share of problems, but street harassment is not a highly prevalent issue here. Awareness, caution, and basic safety measures are nevertheless needed, as is the case with any global destination. Always stick to well-lit areas at night and avoid crime-prone neighborhoods.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Sacramento, being the capital of California, is relatively safe when it comes to petty crimes such as pickpocketing or minor thefts. However, as in any city, it's still important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions to secure personal belongings. The city has a strong police presence, especially in populated areas and during the day, and people generally feel safe in the city. Despite this, there's always a minimal chance of small crimes. To minimize these risks, ensure that your belongings are secure, don’t leave anything valuable visible in your car, and avoid showing off expensive items in public places.

It honestly depends on where in Sacramento you’ll be. West/central Sacramento is pretty dangerous overall, and you’ll typically see weird stuff on the light rails (buses are def better than light rails if you can manage that). North east part is a lot better, but you definitely still get a bit of crime and break ins. I like to have the citizen app so that I know what’s going on in the area. I would recommend not being in downtown at night, or if you are stay to the main roads. And 99% of the time if there’s someone trying to talk to you or anything they’ll stop if you just don’t look at or say anytning to them and carry on with whatever you’re doing (only had like two people that didn’t just move on when they realized I would look or talk to them.) It’s when you acknowledge them that things can go south I’ve noticed. Basically plan day stuff, and if you want to do stuff in downtown at night make sure you take a bus that’s in a public area if you don’t have a car. Light rails work and are fast, but they rarely have security, so it’s a gamble.

I dont believe you’ll be likely to run into any problems, likely some catcalling, unfortunately sometimes men get handsy. I believe for the most part as long as you are aware of you’re surroundings and careful you are pretty unlikely to run into any serious issues. Sacramento is fun and lively! especially downtown there lots of food bars and clubs and much amazing food! I recommend hanging out in midtown.

About Me

Hi my name is courtney! I’m 19. I’m currently on a solo trip in Europe for about 3 months i’m looking to visit Lisbon, Scotland, London and, Lyon during my time! I love to go out a dance (although i’m definitely no pro) and I love to explore. I’d be totally down to travel with someone and am potentially looking for some places to stay.
