Is Sacramento safe for solo female travelers?

Sacramento, the Capital city of California, overall is a quite safe city for solo female travelers. Like in any other city, some neighborhoods can be risky especially late at night, but many areas are populated with restaurants, bars, and shops that are generally safe. It's recommended to remain aware of your surroundings. There is also a reliable public transportation system that connects the city, which can be used safely. However, it's still advised to practice standard precautions.

It honestly depends on where in Sacramento you’ll be. West/central Sacramento is pretty dangerous overall, and you’ll typically see weird stuff on the light rails (buses are def better than light rails if you can manage that). North east part is a lot better, but you definitely still get a bit of crime and break ins. I like to have the citizen app so that I know what’s going on in the area. I would recommend not being in downtown at night, or if you are stay to the main roads. And 99% of the time if there’s someone trying to talk to you or anything they’ll stop if you just don’t look at or say anytning to them and carry on with whatever you’re doing (only had like two people that didn’t just move on when they realized I would look or talk to them.) It’s when you acknowledge them that things can go south I’ve noticed. Basically plan day stuff, and if you want to do stuff in downtown at night make sure you take a bus that’s in a public area if you don’t have a car. Light rails work and are fast, but they rarely have security, so it’s a gamble.

I dont believe you’ll be likely to run into any problems, likely some catcalling, unfortunately sometimes men get handsy. I believe for the most part as long as you are aware of you’re surroundings and careful you are pretty unlikely to run into any serious issues. Sacramento is fun and lively! especially downtown there lots of food bars and clubs and much amazing food! I recommend hanging out in midtown.

Sacramento is fairly safe during the day but is a hotspot for sexual trafficking which makes it feel unsafe. Generally, in the downtown area, you’ll be safe but would want to be mindful of being alone at night.

I think it is very safe overall! It depends on the exact part of town, of course downtown may have more homeless and sketchy people but I never feel unsafe out in public or that I will have my possessions tampered with.

Sacramento has changed in the past 10 years.. as a teen I used to travel via the light rail , by foot and by bike at all hours of the night and I felt safe. I think when you see someone that wants to talk, being non-approachable makes for less interactions (walk with confidence, keep your shoulders and head up, do not have music in your ears loud enough to not be situationally aware) don’t entertain any side remarks someone might make passing by them, do not stop until you get to your destination. I am saying all this from my experience downtown. Now in the past 3 years I have probably been downtown maybe 10 times. I love love love the American and Sacramento Rivers that pass through the city. There is so much culture and community here and you can most likely find your hub of people when you come here as there are people from every corner of the Earth here in Sacramento.
