Is New Mexico Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

New Mexico has areas that are very safe, but there are also locations with higher crime rates, especially in larger cities like Albuquerque. Always remain vigilant, particularly at night. Stick to populated, well-traveled areas whenever possible, and consider joining guided tours for more out-of-the-way attractions. However, many areas in New Mexico, particularly those frequented by tourists, are generally safe and welcoming to solo female travelers.

How safe is New Mexico?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

New Mexico, like any other place, has both safe and unsafe areas. But as a general assertion, central regions and well-populated areas tend to be safer, especially during peak hours. It might be riskier during late-night hours in solitary areas, and it's recommended to avoid walking alone in such situations and instead use a trusted cab service or public transport. Always keep your belongings secured and be alert to your surroundings. Like any other place, your safety can often come down to being aware, trusting your instincts and taking necessary precautions.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in New Mexico, particularly in urban areas like Albuquerque, is generally reliable and safe. However, it can vary significantly depending on the area and time of the day. Metro buses and trains are typically safer and are usually well-patrolled, while late-night services might pose some discomfort. It is advised to remain aware of your surroundings and not to travel alone at unusual hours. Rail Runner Express connecting Albuquerque and Santa Fe is generally considered safe and reliable. Always ensure that you verify bus or train times and routes ahead of time for safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

New Mexico generally tends to be a friendly state with few instances reported of street harassment. As with any location, particular experiences can vary and one should remain cautious and aware of their surroundings, but overall the risk of harassment is relatively low in relation to other states.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

New Mexico sees a moderate level of petty crimes. Much like anywhere, you need to be mindful of your surroundings. Things like pickpocketing or minor theft can happen, especially in crowded tourist spots or public transportation. Always take care of your belongings and avoid showcasing valuable items in public to minimize the risk.

Is New Mexico worth visiting?

Is New Mexico safe for women?

Hello. I’m a native New Mexican and I advise not traveling to Albuquerque alone. I’ve lived here for the majority of my life and this city is not safe. I’ve experienced my fair share of break ins and robberies living in a suburban area. There’s a high crime rate here and do not walk down central by yourself once it’s dark.
