Moderately safe in specific areas/districts. The Yale area has their own police and security. The Italian district is usually safe and has plenty of amazing food, which attracts travels from all over. Some areas of New Haven are VERY unsafe, but you would not visit these areas. If you stay in busy/populated areas, you will be fine. I do not go out alone in New Haven at all personally, but have met up with friends there. I would not stay out alone after dark in New Haven unless I used Uber to pick me up at my location.
