How safe is Milwaukee?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Milwaukee, like any other large city, has safe and unsafe areas. It is advisable to avoid isolated areas and stick to well-lit and busier streets. Utilize local transportation, like the bus or taxi, to traverse longer distances. Also, always stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and try to not display valuable items in public. It's essential to research the city and plan accordingly before the trip, especially planning for night times. Lastly, trust your instincts, if you feel unsafe in an area, don't hesitate to leave.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Milwaukee, like Milwaukee County Transit System, is generally reliable, particularly during the day. However, safety can vary between neighborhoods and during late night hours. As a solo female traveler, staying alert, avoiding less populated routes during off-peak hours, know your route beforehand and always keep your personal belongings secure are wise steps to take. While major incidents on public transportation are not common, minor offenses like theft can happen. It's always a good idea to stay situated near the driver or with other groups of people.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

While walking around in Milwaukee, some level of unwanted attention or street harassment does exist, especially in certain neighborhoods or during late hours. Some female travelers have reported receiving unsolicited remarks or behaviors. However, the majority of locals are respectful and instances of harassment are more the exception than the norm. Always consistently maintain awareness of your surroundings and try to stick to public, well-lit areas where there are plenty of people around whenever possible.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Milwaukee, like any large city, has its share of petty crimes such as pickpocketing or theft. It's advisable to remain vigilant particularly in crowded areas and keep your belongings secured at all times. However, with proper precautions and awareness of your surroundings, it's possible to have a safe and enjoyable journey.

The north side is definitely the most active in terms of crime, it has the poorest zip code in WI. The Milwaukee County Bus system is usually used for people who can't afford cars. I do use it for Summerfest and when I went to college at UWM
