How safe is Kalamazoo?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Kalamazoo is relatively safe, though it's highly advisable to exercise general caution, especially at night. Certain areas may be less safe than others, and it can be somewhat riskier if you're alone. It is always a good idea to stay in well-lit areas and avoid wandering too far off the beaten path. Use common travel safety tips such as avoiding displays of wealth, being aware of your surroundings, and keeping a low-profile.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Kalamazoo's public transportation system, while generally reliable and popular among its residents, does carry some minor safety risks. The Metro Transit provides buses that service all throughout the city and many services run till late which is beneficial. However, like any public transportation system in a city, instances of petty crime, such as pickpocketing or minor harassment, may occur. As always, use your judgment and stay alert, especially during less-crowded hours or in less-busy areas.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Kalamazoo is generally a safe destination for solo female travelers. While there may be occasional instances of unwelcome attention or uncomfortable situations, they are relatively low compared to other cities. However, as with every location, overall safety and personal experiences will always depend on common sense precautions like being aware of your surroundings and avoiding isolated areas particularly at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Kalamazoo, you might come across petty crimes like pickpocketing, theft, and vehicle break-ins, especially in crowded and touristy areas. However, with basic precautions, such as keeping your belongings secure and being aware of your surroundings, these incidents can be avoided. Crime rates vary within the city with some areas having higher incidents than others.

Kalamazoo does have a prevalent homeless population and a mental health crises. There have been dangerous situations involving individuals from these groups but overall I feel like the town is friendly and even my interactions with some of the homeless have been very positive and I think the dangerous situations are random and not correlated specifically to certain areas.
