Is Fort Lauderdale safe for solo female travelers?

Fort Lauderdale is generally safe for solo female travelers. As it's a popular tourist destination, the signposted areas, beaches, and attractions are well maintained and patrolled. The city demonstrates a responsive police force and services. However, like any large city, it's always essential to stay cautious, especially during night or in less crowded places. Keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings, there might be areas of urban grit so it's always better to avoid poorly lit and deserted areas, particularly at night.

Fort Lauderdale is pretty safe. Youll want to use basic awareness: not leaving your purse open where someone could grab your phone and always be mindful of your drink. The main drags have tons of cops but, like anywhere, be wary of dark uncrowded areas at night

During the day I have yet to experience a violent crime. My bad experiences have included catcalling when taking public transportation and uncomfortable run ins with unhoused locals. We are notorious for bad drivers as well. Overall, if you stay in lively areas you should be fine even as a solo traveler.

Sunrise near Sawgrass is VERY safe but I would caution against walking along main roads at night due to traffic accidents or assault attempts. Broward is very unsafe but Sunrise the city close to Sawgrass Mall is good. Wilton Manors is also pretty safe, but I don't like Fort Lauderdale at night. I also frequent Miami, and Wynwood is pretty safe but expensive. South Beach is rife with harassment, I'd only go in a group.

About me

I’m a retired educator and avid traveler. I have traveled with SERVAS and Couchsufing. I often travel solo and stay in hostels. I lived in France in 1964-65 and in 1967-68. I lived in Denmark in 1970-71. I have lived in South Florida for more than 50 years. I like meeting local people and enjoy “home stays” to do that.
