Is Fort Lauderdale Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Fort Lauderdale is generally safe for solo female travelers. As it's a popular tourist destination, the signposted areas, beaches, and attractions are well maintained and patrolled. The city demonstrates a responsive police force and services. However, like any large city, it's always essential to stay cautious, especially during night or in less crowded places. Keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings, there might be areas of urban grit so it's always better to avoid poorly lit and deserted areas, particularly at night.

How safe is Fort Lauderdale?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Fort Lauderdale generally has safe areas, especially in the more tourist-centric parts, but there can be certain neighborhoods where the situation can be less predictable at night. It's generally well-lit and patrolled in tourist areas but it is recommendable to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially while walking alone at night. Make sure you stay in populated places, and use trusted transportation or walk in groups if you have to travel at night. As always, trust your instincts.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Fort Lauderdale offers a range of public transportation options - from buses to trams and water taxis. Generally, it is considered fairly safe with regular patrols and CCTV coverage. However, like any city, it would be wise to keep personal belongings close and avoid traveling late at night. Remember, safety in any city largely depends on situational awareness and smart decisions.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Fort Lauderdale is a friendly city with a laid-back atmosphere. It's home to welcoming locals and tourists alike, and is generally regarded as safe. Instances of street harassment are not a major concern, and the vast majority of visitors report having hassle-free experiences. Of course, like any city, it has its issues, but taking usual precautions should help steer clear of these. Public spaces are often bustling and you're likely to feel safe both during the day and at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Fort Lauderdale, much like other locations, does have instances of petty crimes such as theft and pickpocketing, primarily targeting unsuspecting tourists. However, this doesn't mean it's unavoidable. As a solo female traveler, being alert, maintaining a low profile, and taking precautions such as not displaying valuable items like high-end cameras or smartphones can prevent undesirable situations. It's suggested to avoid isolated areas and use precaution after dark. Overall, Fort Lauderdale can be a safe city to explore with adequate vigilance.

Is Fort Lauderdale worth visiting?

Is Fort Lauderdale safe for women?

Sunrise near Sawgrass is VERY safe but I would caution against walking along main roads at night due to traffic accidents or assault attempts. Broward is very unsafe but Sunrise the city close to Sawgrass Mall is good. Wilton Manors is also pretty safe, but I don't like Fort Lauderdale at night. I also frequent Miami, and Wynwood is pretty safe but expensive. South Beach is rife with harassment, I'd only go in a group.

About me

I’m a retired educator and avid traveler. I have traveled with SERVAS and Couchsufing. I often travel solo and stay in hostels. I lived in France in 1964-65 and in 1967-68. I lived in Denmark in 1970-71. I have lived in South Florida for more than 50 years. I like meeting local people and enjoy “home stays” to do that.
