Columbia currently has a lot of issues with local government and their relations with university officials, who have expressed a deep concern for safety of the highly concentrated young adults and students in the area. There have been a few gun violence incidents specifically close to campuses, though the majority of violent activity tends to occur on the other wire of the interstate from the college campuses.
Posted: January 1, 2026Columbia is a charming little town with a super cute down town area. Columbia is overall a very safe small town. Police regularly patrol and are very friendly. I have never know of any violent crime to ever take place. There aren’t many places to walk at night but if you did you would be safe.

Very safe and suburban college town. The north side of town is slightly more dangerous than the rest but overall, it’s a very safe place to be. You can walk around downtown and feel safe as long as you take normal precautions.

Hey guys! I’m a student from France (Paris and Normandy next to the sea where I grew up). I just moved in the U.S for the year and I’m super excited to explore the country! Traveling is indeed one of my passion (I’ve done backpacking in Southeast Asia and traveled in some European countries). But I also love music (A LOT), cooking, hiking, nature, animals, food, hanging out, and even art museums! Above all I like to meet new people and create amazing memories. I speak English, French and a bit of Spanish, Chinese and German. I would be glad to offer hospitality or even give advice around France and Europe in general!
