I live in downtown Chattanooga in Southside. Some people think it’s dangerous, but I don’t think so. Southside is pretty safe to walk around at night. There is a free shuttle bus that goes from downtown to Southside too. Uber and Lyft seem affordable and readily available if you don’t want to walk at night. There is homelessness, but none of these people have come off as aggressive or have ever bothered me besides an occasional ask for money.

While the downtown area is vibrant and warm, you need to be careful in certain areas. There is quite a bit of gang violence in the city, and it is also present in certain parts of the suburbs. I would not recommend using public transportation.
