Is Chattanooga safe for solo female travelers?

Chattanooga is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. The overall crime rates are relatively low, and the locals are friendly and welcoming. As with any other city, however, it is important to take basic safety precautions. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially late at night and in less busy areas of the city, and use common sense when meeting new people.

I live in downtown Chattanooga in Southside. Some people think it’s dangerous, but I don’t think so. Southside is pretty safe to walk around at night. There is a free shuttle bus that goes from downtown to Southside too. Uber and Lyft seem affordable and readily available if you don’t want to walk at night. There is homelessness, but none of these people have come off as aggressive or have ever bothered me besides an occasional ask for money.

While the downtown area is vibrant and warm, you need to be careful in certain areas. There is quite a bit of gang violence in the city, and it is also present in certain parts of the suburbs. I would not recommend using public transportation.

The downtown city of Chattanooga is safe and full of life. It is a very walkable city, especially the North Shore and Riverfront. Hixson, Red Bank, and Signal Mountain are nice residential areas. Take care if you go past the Southside into the suburbs or to the southeast past the zoo.
