How safe is Baltimore?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Traveling alone in Baltimore at night may have varied levels of safety depending on the area. There are districts like Inner Harbor and Fells Point that are generally safer due to their high tourist traffic, but there remain quite a number of districts with high crime rates. It is recommended to stay in well-lit, more populated areas, use public transportation, and avoid less dense areas at night. Local advice should be followed based on your exact location.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Baltimore’s public transportation system includes buses, a subway system, and a light rail. Like any large city, safety can vary. During the day, public transportation is generally safe, especially when populated. Nighttime travel is where caution is advised. Stick to well-lit areas, and avoid traveling alone late at night if at all possible. As always, being aware of your surroundings and keeping a low profile can further increase your safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

Street harassment in Baltimore is somewhat high. It is fairly common to receive unsolicited comments and offers while walking alone especially at night. Always stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Act confidently and don't hesitate to seek help from local authorities if you feel unsafe. It's advisable to avoid isolated areas and stick to well-lit, crowded places. Using public transportation or reliable ride-shares are generally safer than walking. Particularly during the night times, it's recommended to be extra cautious.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Baltimore, like any other big city, has areas with varying levels of safety. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, theft, or scams are somewhat common especially in crowded areas or tourist spots. It's always wise to be alert, secure your belongings, and mind your surroundings.

I traveled by car from New England and stayed at an Airbnb in Hampden. Nice host, nice place, easy to find parking. I understand North Ave is dicey so I took an Uber to see downtown and the museums. Humid weather but walkable, and people are perfectly friendly. Try staying central to avoid the dicey areas.

I feel like Baltimore is safe, just be nice and respectful. I wouldn’t be out at 3 in the morning without a friend and way to get home, but people are generally trustworthy. There is always the risk of creepy men, but people usually police themselves.

Generally safe during daytime- watch for large groups of guys on scooters and dirt bikes downtown, they sometimes harass passersby. Avoid responding if catcalled, and if you have to walk alone at night, I’d suggest having some sort of protection with you (pepper spray, whistle, etc.). For nightlife, stick to Federal Hill, Fells Point, Canton, or Mt. Vernon. Ubers/Lyft are generally safe and readily available/inexpensive, just make sure to take standard precautions with those. We have ‘squeegee boys’ that wait by some stoplights to squeegee your windshield. If you don’t have money to give to them (some have venmo), politely decline. They’re persistent, it will take a couple of ‘no’s’ to get them to leave, but they will leave.
