How safe is Arcata?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Arcata generally has a friendly environment but like any place, has its own potential safety concerns. At night, the town center can get quite lively, especially during weekends, and not necessarily unsafe. However, as it is a college town, there might be occasional incidences of petty crimes or disturbances, particularly at late hours. It is always advised to remain alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when traversing alone at night.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Arcata is generally reliable and safe. Local bus service, known as the Redwood Transit System, runs through the city and its routes extend to the wider Humboldt County. While like any system there may be issues at odd hours or in less populated areas, most travelers report good experiences. It's commonly used by students from Humboldt State University which adds an extra layer of security. Nevertheless, it is always important to stay vigilant, especially while traveling alone at night.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Arcata is a friendly and relatively safe town in the United States. As a solo female traveler, you might experience some minor levels of street harassment, mostly limited to occasional catcalling or inappropriate comments. However, these incidents are not a common occurrence and most locals are respectful and welcoming. As with any destination, always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Arcata has a moderate risk level for petty crimes. As a solo female traveler, you should be cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. While major incidents are rare, instances of theft, pickpocketing, or car break-ins can occur, especially around crowded places and popular tourist spots.

It's safe, I'd recommend being mainly around Old Town Eureka or Arcata. I feel like both are walkable, but the parts of Arcata that are neighborhoods are safer than most of the places outside of Old Town Eureka. Definitely rent a car or take a taxi. There's a lot to see, and that needs a car to get to.

Arcata is pretty safe. It’s a sleepy stoner town with the worst crimes being car break ins for the most part. Eureka is a little sketchier but again it’s nothing compared to a big city. Sexual violence is around but not really random. More in personal contexts

About Me

Hi, I'm Carissa, I'm 32, and my pronouns are she/her. I love to travel and see less of the touristy things. Although I'm really big on history, architecture, learning how things are made, and food when it comes to travel. I have two cute Yorkies (hypoallergenic) at home that I love dearly, but I am allergic to animal dander. I tend to be on the quieter side, but I love getting to hear other people's stories and try to learn as much as I can wherever I go. I value meeting people, dancing, laughing, eating new things and enjoying magical moments that travel has to offer. I love talking about physical and mental health, food from both historical and socio-economic perspectives, cultural norms, and family systems. You could also find me talking about dance, movies, music, art and fashion. I love it all.
