How safe is Alaska?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Alaska is generally considered a safe destination for a solo female travel. However, safety can vary from region to region. Larger cities like Anchorage can have higher crime rates, similar to other large cities around the world. It is not advised to walk alone at night in poorly lit or isolated areas. However, smaller towns and natural areas are safer. It's still always important to exercise caution, stick to main roads and well-lit areas, and follow common sense precautions.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Alaska, primarily found in the major cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks, is generally safe but the services are quite limited, especially in rural areas. The buses are reliable in urban locations whereas in the more remote regions, it could be less safe due to less frequency and extreme weather conditions. It is also important to keep in mind that distances in Alaska can be huge, so depending on public transportation might not be the most efficient way to explore the state. Therefore, advance planning and caution, especially during the winter months, are recommended.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Alaska is generally considered to be quite safe for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not a commonly reported issue, making it feel secure for women traveling alone. In most places, locals are friendly and respectful. However, as with any destination, it's advisable to always remain cautious and aware of surroundings, particularly if traveling in more remote or less populous areas of the state.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Alaska generally experiences a lower level of petty crime in comparison to other states of the United States. Pickpocketing and small-scale thefts are not prevalent, but they can occur, particularly in larger cities like Anchorage or Fairbanks. Tourist areas are usually safe and well-patrolled, but one should always stay vigilant, particularly in isolated areas. Don't leave personal belongings unattended. Overall, with basic precautions, the risk of being subjected to petty crime in Alaska is relatively low.

Is Alaska worth visiting?

Group travel

If you love snow, nature, mountains and animals, you have to go to Alaska! We did the trip with six girls and it wasn’t that expensive at all for us. Sharing the costs is always a good way to save money. You have to know that the activities are more expensive then another vacation. I would love to go in the summer to, because that’s more fun to hike and be more outside.

Solo travel

Female solo traveller visiting Alaska from the UK. Stayed in mainly hostels to save money on excursions as they are quite expensive. I felt safe and everyone was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Hired a car using TURO for the first few days of my trip, 1st time I’ve done this and couldn’t fault it and was much cheaper than normal car hire companies. Itinerary Anchorage Girdwood Whittier Seward Eagle River / Hatcher Pass Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Talkeetna Alaska Railroad from Talkeetna to Fairbanks. I highly recommend the Gold Star service. Excursions Blackstone Bay Jetski Tour (from Whittier) Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise 7.5hr Real Alaska Tour (Seaveys Ididaride) Northern Lights Tour (Fairbanks)
