Is Ukraine Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Ukraine is generally safe for solo female travelers when sticking to major cities like Kyiv and Lviv, where people are accommodating and there is a well-established tourist infrastructure. There's a good public transportation system and plenty of accommodations to choose from. However, you should practice common safety measures like not walking alone late at night, avoiding deserted areas, and maintaining awareness of your belongings at all times. It is also recommended to avoid Eastern Ukraine and Crimea due to ongoing political instabilities.

How safe is Ukraine?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Ukraine, like any other place, has areas both of safety and risk. Taking specific reference to night-time, it's less safe for a solo female traveler to walk alone at night in Ukraine. Even in safer areas and larger cities such as Kyiv or Lviv, one should always be aware of her surroundings due to occasional instances of petty theft or pickpocketing. Certain areas are less illuminated and less populated at night, which imposes certain risks. Therefore, it is generally advised to use reputable taxi services or use public transport where possible. The safety situations can also change quickly and unpredictably due to political clashes and unrest in certain regions. Having said that, a vast number of tourists visit Ukraine every year and experience a safe and trouble-free journey, however, being cautious, especially at night, is highly recommended.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Ukraine, including buses, trams, and the metro, is generally safe to use but is not without issues. Ukrainian transportation often lacks comfort due to overcrowding and out-of-date vehicles. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can be an issue, especially in busy urban centers and crowded buses or metro stations. Navigating the public transportation can also be somewhat difficult if you do not speak Ukrainian or Russian. Understanding the routes and schedules can be a challenge. However, many people use these services daily without incident. As a solo female traveler, just take usual precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings, not traveling alone late at night, and avoiding poorly lit or deserted stations.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Ukraine generally offers a safe environment for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not a widespread issue, and while occasional instances may occur, they are not considered the norm. Using normal safety precautions and staying in well-lit, populated areas should largely circumvent any potential concerns. There's a general respect for women in society, and most locals are more than willing to assist should any issue arise.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are fairly commonplace, particularly in dense, tourist-heavy areas and on public transportation. Locals recommend being vigilant of your belongings, especially in crowded areas and avoiding flaunting valuable items in public. However, these crimes rarely escalate to violence, especially if there is no resistance from the victim. It's important to always remain aware of your surroundings, take precautions not to attract unnecessary attention and secure your belongings.

Ternopil, Group travel

i travelled with my friend (we both r minors lol) but still we felt pretty safe even in the evenings! must visit a lake and city centre ofc best food we had was in 'Depo', nice burgers, sushi and others. also there are many cool cafes! our budget was like near 2k hryvnyas (50$ lol) per person, we stayed there for 4 days but! we lived in my granny's for free so TRANSPORT YES FINALLY. for me, as a person from Lviv where we have 25₴ = 60 cents for one tram/trolley/bus ride (it IS a lot), transport in Ternopil was smth beautiful. it was much cheaper and not that crowded as in Lviv, you have a place to sit and it drives quickly though all city cuz it is small itself. we loved it!

Kyiv

I have never experienced anything crime related and never heard about it in my social circle. Of course it is important to stay vigilant at all times, but considering situations with crime groups in some European countries, Ukraine and Kyiv especially stays pretty safe space (not taking into account drones and missiles flying over your head (buttt, nothing will happen to you if go to shelter as soon as air raid alert is announced!!) 🫠). As I know, police response time is also quite good. I don’t think that I‘m being biased towards my city, but there is a chance that my environment and life were quite peaceful and safe because of my family compared to someone else’s.

Kyiv

Well, there’s the war happening currently, so, if you’re lucky enough not to get hit by a missile —Kyiv is rather safe 😁 When walking outside, I don’t feel any concerns about being attacked or, god forbid, kidnapped. At nights criminals are not crawling around, no active criminals who take lives are known🤞
