Is Slovakia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Slovakia is generally quite safe for solo female travelers. Major cities like Bratislava have good public safety records. Petty crime such as pickpocketing could be an issue in crowded places, particularly in tourism hotspots, but violent crime is relatively low. It is always recommended to stay vigilant, avoid deserted areas at night, and keep your personal belongings secure. Most locals are friendly and helpful, and English is commonly spoken in tourist areas.

How safe is Slovakia?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Slovakia is generally a safe country, even during nighttime. As in all countries, some areas might pose a higher risk, especially in bigger cities like Bratislava. However, these are exceptions rather than the norm. It is always advisable to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid isolated areas. Public transportation operates late into the night in many regions and taxi services are reliable. Yet, like anywhere else, it's always best to err on the side of caution and make sure someone knows where you are when walking late at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Slovakia is generally safe, reliable and widespread. It includes buses, trams, and trains which are usually efficient and punctual. However, as in any place, it's advisable to remain vigilant, keep an eye on your belongings at all times, and avoid empty carriages during late hours. While instances of crime are not common, it's always better to be cautious and aware of your surroundings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Slovakia, overall, maintains a lower level of street harassment compared to other nations. Instances of mild catcalling or grating comments may occur occasionally, but such happenings are much less frequent. Tourists, especially solo female travelers, generally report feeling safe and comfortable while navigating the country’s streets. However, like any destination, it is always important to remain alert and cautious of your surroundings, especially during evenings and in less crowded areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Slovakia, like many European countries, experiences some petty crimes primarily targeting tourists such as pickpocketing, purse snatching or bag slashing, especially in crowded areas or on public transport. However, compared to some other neighboring countries, these instances are relatively low and precautions such as keeping your personal belongings secure and staying aware of your surroundings can significantly reduce the risk.

Bratislava, Solo travel

First of all, I would like to say that it is a very safe place for solo travel. Prices are not too high compared to other European cities. Their most famous dish is similar to halusky niyokki. you can try. Slavin, Slovak National Gallery, Blue Church, Bratislava Castle, Devin Castle are the places you should definitely go. 2 days will be enough to visit the whole city. It was pretty easy to find the buses with google maps. local people were very helpful. They generally know English. In summary, it is a place where you can go and see, but you should not keep expectatiın very high.

Bratislava, Solo travel

It’s really safe for solo traveler to travel in their capital city, there’s not much things to do in Bratislava, I recommend to take a bus 20mins to a small town , there is a meditation circle on the hill of the town which is really amazing!

Bratislava, Slovakia 🇸🇰 As a solo traveler, I think it's a safe city and prices are reasonable whether it's the food, coffee, or the tickets in general. 🩵 I have visited two restaurants and for €10 you can get a very nice quality of meals. Less than €3 can get you a nice quality and quantity of latte or cappuccino.

Bratislava, Solo travel

I spent 2 days in Bratislava and that was enough for me. I visited Devín Castle in the first half of the day, and then I went to the center - Hrad, the Old Town, and covered all the major landmarks. The next day I went to see St. Elizabeth's Church, it was built from blue stone and looked amazing. It is located a bit off the beaten path, so I went there another day (after the main landmarks). I also combined this with a visit to Rusovce Castle, which offers beautiful views and has a large park.

Bratislava, Solo travel

I was in Bratislava last month. Charming city, small, but there's plenty to do. However, it's not the best place for nightlife.

Bratislava was nice and I felt safe. I stayed for one night and felt that was enough. I recommend a trip to Devín Castle.

Bratislava, Solo travel

Bratislava is not too big, not too crowded, has a nice old town, a castle, and several very good museums, which are not big enough to get bored there. Amazing views of the Danube. There are many inexpensive restaurants, tasty food, and good beer and wine. I felt very safe there. I visited Devín Castle on a hill, located at the confluence of the Morava and Danube, a picturesque place.

Bratislava, Solo travel

Bratislava is a rather small and pedestrian-friendly city. I visited it in one day. I stayed there in a hostel and it was quite okay. I felt safe.

Bratislava, Group travel

A few weeks ago I went to Bratislava. It was beautiful there, but there wasn't much to do. I realized that one day/night there was enough for me. We walked around the castle and entered several churches. We also went to the UFO tower just before dusk. We climbed up, took some pictures. Then we had some cocktails at the bar in the UFO tower. When we finished, we returned to the tower and saw Bratislava after dark. It was stunning!

I visited Bratislava this summer. It took me about 6 hours to tour the city. It is very nice, but quite small. I felt safe all the time.

Zilina

Žilina is overall safe and peaceful city. There has been incidents yet despite them, most of the locals are normal… maybe a bit grumpy but not in a threatening way. There are weirdos everywhere, but if you usually look at them angrily or tell them to piss off, they let you be. I’ve been living here sinice birth and I’d like to live in a city like this when I get older.

Kosice

I feel usually safe during the day and in the evenings. At night I usually take a taxi. It can be pretty vacant and calm during the week in the city center, at the end of the week it’s moderately lively, mostly with young people.

About Me

What fullfils me the most is moving my body, being in nature and create things. I love to travel, volunteer and speak languages. I’ve done some volunteering in Georgia, and Erasmus projects in France, Czech republic and Slovakia. I’m most myself when I dance and stay in nature. I enjoy hiking and climbing and often spend time in the forest. 🦋 Right know my travelling consists mostly of visiting Berlin, Germany, because of a professional Somatic educator training I started in September 2024. I’m looking for opportunities to connect in Berlin and possibly being hosted. 🙌🏽
