Venice is a very touristic city so it's normally very safe. At night it is much much less crowded than during the day and some people might find it uncomfortable to walk around but I personally think it's safe. Mestre is considered less safe, but I lived there for many years and never had any problems. Maybe just try to avoid walking around alone very late at night (after 1/2 am) especially in Marghera!

It’s not the safest place. One should be very careful especially after dark. Usually when I’m walking after dark in the center area I feel less afraid, but if it’s certain neighborhoods I would never walk alone like via piave.

Despite the nearby Venice being fairly safe and touristic, Mestre is not at all safe. I’ve lived here for more than half a year with students, but I would not walk alone after it’s dark. Especially there are many places you should avoid, such as the station, Via Piave, and underground passages. Not only should you be worried about theft during the day, but there are a lot of drug addicts everywhere, and i would doubt it’s safe for men as well walking here alone at night. Certain managed places...
