Is Guwahati Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Guwahati generally presents a safe environment for solo female travelers. As with any location, practicing basic safety measures is necessary. The people are friendly and ready to offer assistance when needed. Local culture is respectful toward women, but conservative dress is advisable to avoid attracting unnecessary attention. Late-night roaming might not be safe as it can be quite deserted in some areas. Public transportation is reliable and commonly used, making it a fitting choice for traveling within the city. Law enforcement is approachable, but understanding the local language can be extra beneficial to ensure clear communication. The risk is minimal, but location-specific awareness is always recommended.

How safe is Guwahati?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Guwahati, like many other major Indian cities, has areas that are relatively secure, while some might be less safe at night. It is generally safe for women to walk alone in well-lit, populous areas after sunset. However, quiet and less crowded areas might not be as safe and it would be advised to avoid those. Public transportation services and taxis are readily available. Make sure to remain vigilant, especially during late hours, and be aware of local customs and norms.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Guwahati is generally accessible and affordable. The city's bus system and auto rickshaw services are widely used. However, it can be crowded, especially during peak hours. There have been reports of occasional pickpocketing incidents during rush hours, but serious crimes are not that common. Always remain vigilant and cautious of your belongings. For a solo female traveler, it is advisable to avoid late-night travels and always have a reliable contact in case of emergencies.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

While Guwahati is generally a safe city for solo female travelers, instances of street harassment, particularly staring and unsolicited comments, do occur. It's not as pervasive compared to some cities, but a modest dress and cautious attitude can significantly reduce chances of experiencing such incidents.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Guwahati generally affords a safe environment for solo female travelers. However, instances of petty crimes like pickpocketing and small thefts do occur, particularly in crowded places or public transportation. Therefore, it's vital to remain vigilant with your belongings at all times. Street scams are relatively rare but can happen. Taking usual safety precautions should suffice in preventing such situations.

It is pretty safe though. However, steer clear from certain people who would want to be super friendly. People may pass judgements but it should not bother you. I have been here for 7 years now. I like the place but you have to be careful at certain places at the evening time.

It’s fairly safe in terms of mirder and kidnapping. I would say, robbery does happen and so does cat calling happen sometimes specially in the dark. The city is fairly active till 10pm after that it can get very silent and a bit uncomfortable in the rural areas.
