The city's crime rate is low in general and you seldom hear about any troublesome incidents occurring at night. However, as anywhere else in the world, it's always recommended to remain cautious, avoid unlit or less crowded areas particularly late at night, and stick to the main streets and populated areas. Group travel

Opatija is a small city, which is a great first time experience for someone who wants a little taste of the Croatian coast (which is the reason why we took some friends who were visiting the country). It's easy to feel safe, and it's not overly crowded. There are many beautiful places to take pictures and feel like a sea princess. It's also a good day trip from Zagreb if you don't have a lot of time, but want to have a taste of the sea. Mind you, though, just like most Croatian beaches, you'll find stone rather than sand - I recommend using aqua shoes or diving shoes to walk, as they make everything more comfortable.
