Is Dubrovnik Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Dubrovnik is generally safe for solo female travellers. Dubrovnik has low crime rates and the locals are hospitable and friendly. It's common for tourists to roam the city streets and stunning coastal region without encountering any issues. However, as with any destination, always stay vigilant, especially at night and while in crowded places. Petty theft, like pickpocketing, can occasionally occur in busy tourist areas. Stick to populated areas, take care of your belongings and avoid unlit, deserted locations at night.

Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Dubrovnik is generally safe for women traveling alone even at night. The city is well lit, and there is usually a good amount of people out, even in the evenings. Crime rate is relatively low, and locals are usually helpful and respectful towards tourists. However, as with any city, exercise common sense, stay in well-populated areas at night, and utilize trusted transportation services when possible.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Dubrovnik is actually quite safe and generally reliable. Buses are the most common form of public transport and they tend to be clean and well-maintained. Most locals and visitors use public transportation without any major issues. However, during peak tourist season, buses can become quite crowded, so it is always a good idea to take care of personal belongings to prevent petty theft. Additionally, while most public transport operates during night, frequencies reduce, so plan journeys ahead. English is widely spoken, which makes it easy for travelers to navigate.

Street harassment: Low

Dubrovnik is generally safe for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not a common issue, and most locals are courteous and helpful to tourists. Just like any other popular destination, occasional comments or stares might occur particularly in crowded areas but it's relatively infrequent. Standard precautions such as being aware of your surroundings and avoiding dimly lit areas at night should suffice for a comfortable travel experience.

Petty crimes:Low

Dubrovnik is relatively safe when it comes to petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching. These incidents are infrequent and largely opportunistic due to the city's high tourist traffic. However, like anywhere, it's important to stay vigilant and take standard precautions. Be aware of your belongings, particularly in crowded tourist hotspots and on public transport, and avoid flaunting valuables or large sums of money.

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Dubrovnik is of high quality and completely safe to drink. There's no need to buy bottled water, you can refill your bottle anywhere, even from public fountains located in and around the city. It meets all the criteria of the European Union for drinking water.

A charming little town. Don't hesitate to walk around the city walls for a beautiful view of the old town (if I remember correctly, it was 25€). There's also another spot for a nice view via a cable car (which you have to pay for), not far from the city center. One day is more than enough to visit the old town.

I was in Dubrovnik last September and loved it. It felt super safe and they have excellent public transportation and the infrastructure was amazing for such a small city. I did a couple of tours there and stayed right across from the water. There’s so much to do and the tiny city is beautiful and clean.

I only spent one day there, but I really enjoyed just walking around the city. I highly recommend the Panorama Restaurant. It is at the top of the cable car and is the best place to watch the sunset. Buza Bar is a neat place to grab a drink.

I spent three nights in Dubrovnik, so beautiful. Definitely found it more pricey than other parts of Croatia I went to, particularly food and drinks. I bought some stuff from the supermarket to have for breakfast and snacks during the day so that I could just eat out for dinner and save my money for experiences and activities. My favorite thing I did was go on a guided kayak tour. Three hours kayaking out in the bay, you head out to Lokrum Island and stop off at a cave to go swimming and snorkeling. Separately, I also walked up the track to Mt Srd, which had amazing views at the top (and is a free activity). Highly recommend both things, as well as the city walls.

Dubrovnik is just… too damn gorgeous, just breathtaking. I literally cried when I saw the old port because omg it feels like a scene out of a movie, the water is really turquoise and it looks so so pretty and the old town just had such a familiar and ancient vibe. I honestly would want to come to Croatia again in the summer … some other time hehehe. It really is so damn gorgeous and It was so therapeutic,

Loved Dubrovnik. Since the town is a UNESCO world heritage site most of the architecture has been preserved. Feels like you're walking in a medieval movie set. Absolutely amazing. Plus did a Game of Thrones tour since some of the scenes were shot there

I didn't enjoy Dubrovnik much. The city was really overrun with cruise ship tourists. I also found it really expensive. It was also so hot I never got to do the walls as it was too humid. It was beautiful though.

Dubrovnik was lovely. I got an Airbnb with a porch that overlooked the ocean, and I could see Old Town on my right. It was especially beautiful at night when Old Town had a beautiful glow. Super safe for female travelers, I saw a lot of solo women walking about at 10 pm.

Dubrovnik is definitely awesome. I loved kayaking around lokrum Island, great experience. The game of thrones tour was fab too, amazing place. Wednesdays were the busiest days as cruise ships came in. Also had day trips to Mostar and Kotar, well worth a visit to both.

I enjoyed Dubrovnik. Stayed in an Airbnb outside the walled town, but within easy walking distance along the cliff with sea in view the entire walk. Rented a car for a few days to see wine country, did tastings etc. It was late May. Islands off coast beautiful. Enjoyed Market day.
