Is Barranquilla Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Barranquilla as a city offers a vibrant culture and friendly locals making it an interesting destination to explore. However, as a solo female traveler safety precautions are required. Petty crime like theft and pick-pocketing is common in crowded places and at night. Public transportation might not be safe late evenings and it is better to opt for reliable taxi services. It's recommended to stay in reputable accommodations and avoid lesser-known neighborhoods. Always be mindful of your surroundings, avoid flashing valuables and keep emergency contact numbers handy.

How safe is Barranquilla?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Like any large city, Barranquilla has areas that are less safe than others, particularly at night. It's advisable not to walk alone during night hours, and instead, opt for safer options like trusted taxi services or Uber. There may be a higher risk of crime in deserted areas or places without much street lighting. It's also highly recommended to avoid flashing valuable possessions to draw less attention. Always maintain a good awareness of your surroundings and try not to look lost or vulnerable. However, many locals and visitors enjoy Barranquilla without any issues, it’s all about being sensible and cautious.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Barranquilla's public transportation is overall relatively safe, especially during the day. The city buses, known as Transmetro, are kept tidy and run on regular routes throughout the city although they can sometimes become quite densely packed. However, it's always advised to stay cautious and avoid displaying expensive items in order to avoid petty crimes like pickpocketing. Also, taxis are considered safer, especially at night. Although most taxi drivers are trustworthy, it is recommended to use only official taxis booked through a trusted app or a telephone service. Even in this, it's always best to keep your belongings close and secure.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Barranquilla, while generally a welcoming and friendly city, still maintains a moderate level of street harassment. This could range from unnecessary comments to more audacious cat-calls particularly in busier areas and during special occasions or festivals. However, it's also worth mentioning that the local authorities have been making efforts in creating a safer environment for women and every visitor in general.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Barranquilla, while not directly targeted for petty crimes, does experience occasional instances such as pick-pocketing and snatch-thefts, particularly in crowded places like markets and tourist attractions. It's always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings and secure your belongings in these areas. Despite these instances, security measures are relatively well-enforced.

You just need to keep your things close and know which places not to go, specially at night. It’s preferable not to go out alone, but it’s actually not as unsafe as most people would think. Also taxi drivers sometimes try to charge extra if they think you’re a foreigner. 🙈
