Is Providencia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Providencia is a relatively safe island in Colombia given its serene atmosphere, less crowded areas and friendly locals. However, like any other travel destination, it is recommended to take common safety measures such as not wandering alone at night in desolate areas, safeguarding personal belongings, and avoiding suspicious activities. Local authorities are supportive and generally, the inhabitants are protective towards tourists.

Safety index

Safety at night:Unsafe

Although Providencia has a generally friendly atmosphere, like any other location, safety can decrease during the late hours. It's always recommended for solo female travelers to avoid walking alone at night, as some areas may not be heavily populated or well-lit. Using trusted transportation methods rather than walking is often a safer choice. Be alert, and always keep in contact with someone aware of your whereabouts.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Providencia is generally safe. Regular buses, taxis, and ferries are reliable and widely used by both locals and tourists. However, as a solo female traveler, you should ideally avoid late-night travel and stay aware of your belongings at all times for peace of mind.

Street harassment:Low

In Providencia, the level of street harassment is relatively low compared to other regions. The locals tend more towards politeness and respect, particularly in interactions with tourists. However, like everywhere else, every experience varies and it's always important to keep personal safety forefront in your mind. Dress modestly to blend in, keep alert, and always follow your instincts in situations that make you uncomfortable.

Petty crimes:Low

Providencia is generally a quiet and peaceful destination. The risk for petty crimes like pick-pocketing, purse-snatching and minor thefts is relatively low. However, as with any location, it's important to remain vigilant, and not bring attention to valuable belongings. Keep your documents and money in a secure place and be mindful of your surroundings particularly at night. Although petty crime risk is not significant, it's always a good practice to exercise common sense and precaution. Just like in any place, avoiding displaying valuables or travelling alone late at night can decrease the chances of encountering petty crime.

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Providencia is generally considered to be safe to drink. However, it's recommended to drink bottled water if you have a sensitive stomach as the minerals in the local water may be different from what your body is used to.

Solo travel experience

This is a very safe part of the world in terms and of crime, to the extent that people were comfortable leaving their iPhones on a sunbed and going for a swim or wandering off for half an hour. Everyone on the island knows everyone, it has a beautiful small community vibe. The local men are genuinely very friendly to all visitors but often try their luck with solo female travellers and on more than one occasion would try to put their arm around me or another female. Just be quite direct saying no otherwise they will continue trying to sweet talk you which gets annoying and uncomfortable. The island is without doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been to in my life, absolutely worth the bumpy catamaran trip from San Andres. Incredible snorkelling and diving and relaxed vibes all round. Food and drink were great (try the coco locos!) on South West beach which has beautiful sunsets too. I stayed at Posada Miss Portia which I would highly recommend
