Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province in China, is generally safe for solo female travelers. The crime rate is relatively low and violent crimes are rare. Local people are quite friendly towards foreigners and willing to provide help if you need it. However, as everywhere else, it is important to take basic safety precautions. Beware of your surroundings, especially during the night or in crowded places. It's always better to avoid desolate areas or any situation that feels unsafe. Whilst scams targeting tourists are not common, they're not unheard of either, so just exercise general vigilance. Understandably, a language barrier may exist but English is taught in schools and is spoken in many hotels and major tourist areas.
