Is Shenzhen Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Shenzhen is generally safe for solo female travelers. Petty theft, like pickpocketing and bag-snatching, can occur, especially in crowded places, so it's important to keep personal belongings secure at all times. Public transportation and taxis are reliable and safe to use. However, travelers should also be mindful of scams that target tourists. Violence against foreigners is rare, and the local authorities are usually helpful and cooperative. It's also easy to navigate around the city, and most signs have English translations. That said, it's always a good idea to learn a few basic phrases in Mandarin for emergency situations. The nightlife is reasonably safe, but it's still advisable to avoid deserted areas and ensure a safe way back to the hotel beforehand. Overall, as long as common sense and basic precautions are observed, travelling solo in Shenzhen can be a safe and enjoyable experience.

How safe is Shenzhen?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Shenzhen is generally safe even for solo female travelers. However, it's recommended to maintain a typical level of caution during night hours, much like any other city. The standard safety measures such as not flashing expensive possessions or taking reputable transport services only, should be adhered to. Not many locals speak English, so it could be hard to ask for help in case you need. Also, bars or clubs can get rowdy at times, so it's always essential to remain vigilant and avoid dimly lit and less crowded areas.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Shenzhen, is generally safe. The buses and metros are modern, have CCTV cameras and have extensive networks that cover the whole city, making them reliable. However, like any other bustling cities, it may get crowded during peak hours, so be conscious of your belongings. Also, English information may not always be readily available, so knowing a bit of basic Chinese or having a translation app can be helpful.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Shenzhen, most women report low levels of street harassment. It's a busy, cosmopolitan city with a high level of safety, even for solo female travelers. Respect for personal space is commonly observed by locals due to cultural norms. While it's important to be aware of your surroundings, the risk of street harassment isn't high compared to other cities globally.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Shenzhen is generally considered safe for travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching do occur, but they are not especially common. Maintaining general cautiousness, such as securing personal belongings and being aware of one's surroundings, especially in crowded areas, would significantly limit any potential risks.

Is Shenzhen worth visiting?

Group travel

Shenzhen is really an amazing place to visit. Being a girl I was a little hesitant at first but the people there were really friendly and cooperative. If you go to Shenzhen you must visit the famous Huaqiang Electronic market, the seventh tallest building in the world. If you are a vegetarian like me it will be a little hard but there are really good restaurants and you can ask them if they can make the dish without meat. You must visit the beaches of Shenzhen as well.

About Me

I am a business consultant, born in China and graduated from university in Hong Kong. Here are 3 fun facts about me: 1. During my university years, I was able to travel to 9 different countries through scholarship applications and cultural exchange programs. 2. During the period since starting my career, I have not had a stable home base, living in many cities across China. I consider this my "YOLO (You Only Live Once) plan" and have been keeping a YOLO diary, documenting my experiences in over 30 different locations in China so far. 3. I hope to live to the age of 103, as I find this world to be endlessly fascinating and would love to experience it across two centuries.
