Is Beijing Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Beijing is considered relatively safe for solo female travelers. It offers a rich cultural experience with a low crime rate. However, as with any global city, precautions should be taken especially at night in crowded places. It's always important to stay aware of your surroundings, and be wary of common tourist scams. In general, locals are helpful and respectful towards foreigners, and there's a considerable police presence in most parts of the city. However, it's crucial to keep the embassy or consulate phone number handy just in case.

How safe is Beijing?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Beijing, is generally safe for solo female travelers even at night. The city is well-lit and has a strong safety infrastructure. There's usually an abundance of people due to its high population density, which can add to the sense of security. However, it's still advisable to be cautious and always be aware of your surroundings, especially in less crowded areas or when taking late-night public transportation.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Beijing is generally safe. The subway, buses and taxis are commonly used by foreign and domestic travelers alike. Subway stations and buses have clear signage, often in English and Chinese. However, during peak hours, they can become extremely crowded which may cause discomfort. Taxis, although plentiful, sometimes avoid picking up foreign passengers due to language barriers, and might attempt to overcharge. Make sure to use only licensed taxis or reputable ride sharing apps. Overall, exercising the usual travel vigilance is advised.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Beijing, street harassment is not a prevalent issue compared to other places around the world. It's fairly common for foreigners to be approached by vendors or even beggars in tourist areas, but these encounters are generally harmless. Direct harassment, especially towards women, is less common due to the cultural norms and strict laws of the country. However, it's always important to stay vigilant, avoid less traveled areas after dark and be aware of your surroundings for your safety.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Beijing, as a global metropolis, is generally considered safe compared to other major cities worldwide. However, like in any populated area, it is not entirely free from the risk of concern for petty crime. Crimes like pickpocketing or wallet snatching can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas, marketplaces, and on public transportation. To help minimize risk, one should always keep personal belongings secure and remain aware of surroundings.

I loved Beijing. I only had time to spend two days there which was a pity. I felt very safe. I did not so much like the Dinghe hostel, which had no atmosphere. I did really like my visit to the Great Wall of China at Jinshanling. And I can also recommend the three stone kite shop, where you can buy crazy beautiful hand made kites! Besides that I took a lot of metro’s, enjoyed the 798 art scene and wandered the streets.

I worked in Beijing for a year and I loved living here. I don’t like the job but the city is amazing. Food is affordable, Didi (their taxi version) is affordable and fast, payment is convenient. So many things are extremely convenient but you need to know the system. It’s not friendly to tourists unless you have an insider due to the blocking of majority of western owned apps hence VPN is a must or you could use roaming. Although you still need a local number to get a lot of things here like buying tickets.

My trip to Beijing was amazing. Highlights included hiking the Great Wall, exploring the historic Forbidden City, and enjoying the serene Summer Palace. The food was delicious, from Peking duck to street snacks. The blend of ancient and modern made it unforgettable.

A 24-hour stop in Beijing, but enough to get to know the city. I was unlucky to be in a heavy smog, but nevertheless the walk was beautiful. A big plus is low prices, the staff at the hotel / restaurant / store speak English and a convenient and understandable metro, minus very long distances, from point A to point B, you need to walk from 30 minutes to an hour (although it seems close on the map), strong smog, without a normal VPN, you can not get to the Internet. An interesting experience, I would be glad to return to China again)

Solo travel

I went alone to Beijing in July. The subway there is fantastic and easy to understand. I didn't have any problems, I wasn't worried about safety. I loved watching the giant pandas at the local zoo, the Summer Palace was great. I practically visited everything, except the Great Wall of China, by subway. The Great Wall is the only thing for which I booked a tour. The most important tip is to get a VPN before leaving, which will allow you to use things like Google and Facebook when you're there.

you can walk lonely on the street at any time, no robbery, very few theft, havent heard of rape. there maybe beggers just ignore them, homeless people are usually sent back to their home town by police, so its rare too.

Very safe city - I’ve been walking at night since teenage life and never had issues. I would recommend solo famale to consider this city as it is safe and easy to get around. Also more people in Beijing speak English than other Chinese regions.
