In Brazil in general, and also here in Porto Alegre, where I live, it’s important to keep your belongings very close to you at all times, like your phone, bag, and wallet. Stay aware of the area you’re walking in and pay attention to the people around you. If you notice someone watching you too closely, something might happen. It’s safer to walk around if you’re accompanied, not all areas of Porto Alegre are like this, but to be on the safe side, having someone with you is better. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in downtown Porto Alegre. Stick to busier, well-lit areas. During the day, downtown is much better for walking. It’s also usually safer to take an Uber rather than walking at night, for example
Posted: November 26, 2025As dangerous as most cities are. A lot of local girls walk around after it’s dark but I don’t would not even dare. No going out after 6 pm!! Women in general don’t have much to fear here, most that men will do is to maybe stare or whistle but that is very rare nowadays. Dress any way you like and you’ll be fine

POA is a generally safe big city for brazilian standards if you take proper safety measures. Use uber to move around in the city, don’t walk alone after dark, watch out for your drinks at parties, and stick to the busier areas.

It’s safe for women, but it’s not recommended for you to walk alone at night because of robberies. If you are with other people, it’s fine! Just don’t walk with your phone out or your jewelry showing too much because it’s easier to get targeted like that. But if you are with other people, not alone it’s gonna be easier for you to just walk around without a worry. Crowded places are definitely easier for you to get robbed, but I would say people just have to save your bags or take care of your things because of pick pockets.

Porto Alegre is a capital in the south of Brazil so you need to take all the precautions you would in any big city, but it’s not dangerous as long as you stick to the nice areas of town, like the more central areas such as Moinhos de Ventos, Petrópolis, Montserrat and such.
