Is Belo Horizonte Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Belo Horizonte is moderately safe for solo female travelers, but just like in any other city, it's important to take precautions. Daytime is generally safe but it's recommended to avoid empty or poorly lit areas at night. It's always a good idea to stay in reputable accommodations, avoid displaying valuable items in public, and use reliable transportation. Communicate regularly with someone about your whereabouts and learn some basic Portuguese phrases to help you navigate the city.

How safe is Belo Horizonte?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Belo Horizonte carries a certain amount of risk for solo female travelers, especially during the night. Like in any big city, there are areas that are safer than others, but incidents of street crime such as robbery and pickpocketing can be common in certain neighborhoods. It's recommended to use reliable transportation such as registered taxis or rideshare services during night hours and avoid walking alone if possible. Utilizing common travel safety tips like sticking to well-lit, populated areas and keeping your personal belongings secure can also improve your personal safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

In Belo Horizonte, the public transportation system, including buses and the single metro line, are commonly used by locals and tourists. During peak hours, they can be crowded which may lead to occasional pickpocketing cases. However, public transportation is generally reliable and functional. Night travel on public transportation is less recommended, and it's always advisable to be aware of your surroundings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Belo Horizonte, as a cultural hub and metropolitan city, generally demonstrates respect towards women. Occasional honks, stares or comments may occur, but it is usually seen as an outlier. However, this doesn't negate the importance of exercising basic safety measures like avoiding deserted or poorly lit areas at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

Belo Horizonte, like many other urban centers in Brazil, has a moderate to high petty crime rate. Tourists, and particularly solo female travelers, can sometimes be seen as soft targets for crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and cellphone theft, especially in crowded tourist hotspots and public transportation. Please maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times, keep your belongings secure, and be cautious when using your electronics in public.

Belo Horizonte is a relatively safe city by Brazilian standards. During the day, it is safe to take public transportation and walk around the city. However, the city becomes a bit more dangerous at night and in some specific areas, so if you go out at night, be accompanied or stay in well-populated places. Always keep an eye on personal belongings, especially wallets and cell phones.

Comfy town due to the hospitality of people from Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte’s district). Although, such as any place in Brazil, you got to pay attention to muggers and keep your phone hidden while taking a walk. Overall, a safe city.
