Is Algiers Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Algiers poses certain safety issues, particularly for solo females. Predominantly, the concerns arise from high crime rates. Unwanted attention, insult and sometimes physical aggression are common. Public transport and traveling during the night can be risky. Despite this, the city is not entirely off-limits. With common sense, caution, and cultural respect, travel can be feasible. Tourist police presence is high in popular areas and locals are generally willing to help. As always when traveling, ensure families or friends know your itinerary, ensure you dress modestly, and avoid late night outings to ensure your safety.

How safe is Algiers?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

While Algiers is generally peaceful, it is not advisable for a solo female traveler to walk alone at night. Even though it's rich in culture and beauty, undesirable situations can occur, especially in less populated areas. It's better to use authorized taxi service when moving about at night or stay in well-lit and crowded areas. Local customs are also quite conservative, adding another layer to the night-time safety aspect.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Algiers, including buses and taxis, is reasonably safe during the day. However, it can be crowded and a bit chaotic, especially during peak hours. It's important to stay vigilant about pickpockets in these congested areas. At night, using public transportation is generally not recommended, as service can be inconsistent and potentially less safe. Hiring a reputable taxi or using a known ride-sharing app may be a preferable alternative.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Algiers, has moderate levels of street harassment. While the local culture is predominantly conservative, you may experience occasional catcalling or unwelcome advances, particularly in busier public areas. As a solo female traveler, it's recommended to dress modestly and stay alert to avoid unwanted attention. However, many women travel here safely and find locals to be hospitable and respectful.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

While Algiers, the capital city of Algeria, can be a vibrant and fascinating destination, it has a moderate risk of petty crimes, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, particularly in crowded places, touristic areas, and local markets. As a solo female traveler, it's advisable to stay vigilant about your belongings, avoid displaying valuable items such as expensive Jewelry or technology, and avoid less crowded places or empty streets, particularly after dark.

It depends on the place you are, but it's generally fine. You need to be careful as you would anywhere in the world. Prefer well-known and lively places like Val d'Hydra, Ben Aknoun, Hydra, Dely Brahim, Sidi Yahia, and Algiers Center.

It's a big city. It is pretty safe but you need to be smart and self aware, you better be conscious about your environment. Apart from that nothing to worry about. There are a lot of helpful people, the locals are generally nice.
