Is Algeria Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Traveling alone in Algeria as a female should be done with caution. Like many destinations, the experience can greatly depend on the areas you choose to frequent and your behavior. Always consider local customs, avoid remote places, do not travel at night, and be aware of your surroundings. Although terrorism attacks are less frequent these days, there is still a risk of criminal activities. Use trusted, local, and professional guides in the Sahara areas to improve safety and experiences. Despite these challenges, many parts of Algeria have a lot to offer in terms of culture, heritage, and scenery.

How safe is Algeria?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Algeria is generally not advisable for solo female travelers to explore at night. Areas might not be well-lit and conditions may not be safe or secure. It's always wise to be extra cautious, limit your night movements, and always be aware of your surrounding.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Algeria such as buses, trams and taxis are generally reliable. However, it is wise to be cautious, particularly during the night, as occurrences of theft are reported. Mostly, foreigners might face difficulties understanding routes due to language barrier. It's advisable to arrange for a reliable local guide or use gps for navigation. Be wary of overcrowded buses and always mind your belongings. Authorized taxis are mostly dependable, but ensure the driver uses the meter to avoid overcharging.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Algeria, street harassment can vary in different locations. In urban areas like Algiers, it is relatively low and more similar to what you might expect in other large cities worldwide. However, in more rural or conservative areas, there might be a higher chance of catcalling or unwelcome attention. It's recommended to dress modestly and avoid less crowded areas, especially after dark. Always trust your instincts if a situation feels uncomfortable.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Algeria, petty crimes like pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and smartphone theft are common, particularly in crowded areas and tourist hotspots. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain vigilance, secure personal belongings, and avoid displaying expensive items. However, Algerian people are generally welcoming and helpful towards visitors. As with any travel, risks can be mitigated through safe practices.

Algiers, Local

Safe. Beautiful. Affordable. You will enjoy your time. It's better to stay in the capital near the transport links. Bank cards aren't frequently used, so it's preferable to bring cash or exchange money upon arrival in Algeria. You're very welcome.

Algeria

Algeria has high security. There policemen quite everywhere, if not gendarmerie also is quite everything. There are emergency hotlines for kids in danger, beach emergency, eco emergency... Nobody bothers you if you look different. The people is very welcoming and friendly. You shouldn't be scared as an outsider individual or group AT ALL.

Algiers

It’s very area dependent, « richer areas » like hydra or Sidi yahia are really safe whereas downtown you’d experience more sexual harassment and pickpockets. But overall it’s generally safe, just stay cautious and dress modestly

About me

Hey !!! 😆 I'm Yamina from Algiers! At 23 and still a student, I'm all about making mistakes to figure out who I am and explore myself ! Hahaha . I'm a travel enthusiast, art lover, and always up for discovering new places. Wandering the streets and soaking up the sun are my jams. Music is my constant companion; I listen to it all the time and adore attending concerts.
