Jakarta, the sprawling capital city of Indonesia, is located on the northwest coast of the world's most populous island, Java. Known for an intriguing blend of cultures, heritage and modernity, the city plays host to the dazzling National Monument, historic museums including the Jakarta History Museum and Museum Bank Indonesia, drawing in people from the world over. Jakarta's vibrant culinary scene is worth exploring, with an array of street food stalls and upscale restaurants serving delicious local cuisines. Despite being a bustling metropolis, Jakarta doesn't shy away from green spaces famously known as "the lungs of the city," like the renowned Ragunan Zoo and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a beautiful recreational park showcasing Indonesia's culture and indigenous flora and fauna. Its massive shopping malls include Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia that are not just shopping destination but a complete family entertainment place.

Jakarta was my first destination outside of Europe that I traveled solo to. I was a bit scared and overwhelmed at first. But I didn’t feel unsafe or uncomfortable any time, even while walking alone in the streets. People were amazing, welcoming and really helpful. It’s definitely not a place for everyone, the “sights” are nothing special but the culture and atmosphere is there. I stayed in a hostel called The Packers Lodge and I can only recommend it. Great for meeting people, welcoming, clean with a kitchen.
