Is Jakarta Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Jakarta is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. The locals are amicable and willing to help should you need directions or recommendations. However, one should remain cautious and be aware of their surroundings, especially in crowded places to prevent pickpocketing. It is also advisable not to flaunt expensive belongings openly. As in any city of its size, certain areas are less safe, especially at night, and should be avoided. Travelers should also consider dressing modestly as it's a Muslim-majority city.

How safe is Jakarta?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Jakarta's capital, is generally safe but precautions should be taken, especially at night. The city's crime rate is relatively low and people are generally friendly. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing or theft can be a concern, especially in crowded areas. It's advised not to flash valuable items or walk alone in less busy and dimly-lit areas after dark. Using reputable transportation services at night is recommended.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Jakarta varies greatly in terms of safety. On one hand, official taxis, mobile apps like Grab/Go-jek and the relatively new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system provide reliable and secure transport. On the other, traditional options such as buses or 'angkots' (minivans) can be crowded and less safe due to pickpocketing instances. Women's only carriages are available in some public transport which is a good initiative towards safety. However, it is always advised to be cautious, especially for solo female travelers. It is better to avoid late night travels if possible.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Jakarta can present a medium level of street harassment. While it's not as intense as in some other cities around the world, you might still experience some unwanted attention, cat-calling or persistent street vendors. Although this harassment is more of an annoyance than a threat, it's important to remain confident and vigilant. It's also recommended to dress conventionally to respect the local culture and avoid attracting unnecessary comments or stares.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Jakarta, the rate of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, purse-snatching goes moderate especially in crowded areas and on public transport. Be aware of your surroundings to minimize this risk. Using anti-theft bags and avoiding displaying valuable items can greatly help as preventive measures.

Is Jakarta worth visiting?

Solo travel

Jakarta was my first destination outside of Europe that I traveled solo to. I was a bit scared and overwhelmed at first. But I didn’t feel unsafe or uncomfortable any time, even while walking alone in the streets. People were amazing, welcoming and really helpful. It’s definitely not a place for everyone, the “sights” are nothing special but the culture and atmosphere is there. I stayed in a hostel called The Packers Lodge and I can only recommend it. Great for meeting people, welcoming, clean with a kitchen.

Solo travel

Alot of people told me there isnt anything in Jakarta but I still went ahead with a solo trip. The people in Jakarta are very friendly and helpful. I stayed in All Season Thamrin Hotel which is 10 mins walk to the malls . Thamrin City was my favourite as I could purchase cloths at wholesale price. I went to Jakarta old town and I love the peaceful surroundings. Jakarta has MRT but I didnt commute. Most of the time I used GoJek their private hirer and its really affordable. Their food is amazing dont forget to try their Jamu drink if you are visiting.

In Jakarta, you can easily using public transportation with only using one card, but I’m not recommend to walking on pedestrian. For woman, when you walking alone, there’s a lot of people will cat calling.

As a female, I don't recommend walking alone at night. Take an uber / taxi please. As long as you're not out alone in the streets, you're pretty safe. I don't worry about safety in the malls or any indoors but definitely be careful and vigilant in car parks.
