Springfield, IL is generally safe as long as you stay away from areas with known gang activity. The police are not much better as they have several bad officers on the force. One officer killed Sonya Massey in her home, an unarmed black woman, while she was complying with instructions. Downtown has several unhoused people, though nothing on the scale of larger cities, and they usually leave you alone.
Posted: March 24, 2025Springfield, MO is fairly safe in my opinion. I’ve walked around downtown many evenings and nights but always try to be aware of my surroundings. If walking alone I do carry pepper spray. There are areas in town that I avoid but not a lot where it would come to sought out tourist locations.

Most of Springfield is safe, though there are areas of the city that are less safe. I typically don't walk alone after dark no matter where I am, but there are many neighborhoods where this is not a problem. As always, stay aware of your surroundings.
Posted: September 3, 2024Springfield is not at all safe, especially for women and especially at night. There are lots of homeless drug addicts who WILL approach you, touch you, yell at you, or all of the above. Easy access to I-44 and Hwy 60 makes Springfield a hotspot for human trafficking. You’re fine to go out during the day on your own as long as you stay aware of your surroundings.
Posted: May 25, 2024Generally unsafe to be alone at night. Violent crime is high and petty theft is common. Proceed with caution if approached you on the street. Do not make eye contact at gas stations or public parks. If you have to visit here, do it with a buddy and stay on the south side of town.

The good parts are ok in lighted areas after dark but for the most part the more populated areas tend to have a lot of gang activity and drug use so crime ensues and crack heads can be annoying dope fiends just sad its all drugs here and poverty. Welcome!

I'm a 30-something from Central Illinois looking to travel a bit after graduating with my MPH.

I'm 42 years old, and I have traveled quite a bit internationally and domestically. Being newly-divorced, I still want to travel like I did with my husband. I think I'd feel more comfortable in some situations traveling with another woman
