To be honest, it really depends on the region of the city that you choose. If it's something in the outskirts (like Murino), than it's dangerous. The centre of the city is packed with people most of the time and even in the night, and it also has a lot of police on the streets. From my childhood I lived in the so-called "criminal" part of the city, Kupchino, but neither I or my girlfriends have never experienced anything assaulting. The city is mostly full of some freaks and weirdos, but they are mostly harmless. But overall, I sometimes feel more safe in S-Petersburg, than in Austria (where I live now)

Saint-Petersburg is a big city, but I fell pretty safe out there. I have never been robbed or attacked on the street and I walk a lot even after midnight. Of course you should be careful about places you go, but it just a common rule for everything

At days super safe, but i don't walk at nights so can't tell properly. But when it's dark outside abd I need to walk from metro station to my home, no one ever assaulted me or tried to communicate, I think I just lucky, don't know

In fact, St. Petersburg is a fairly calm city, the metro is very clean and safe, there are cameras and lights everywhere. I would recommend avoiding some areas (for example, Murino, Shushary, Kupchino, and if we talk about the center, Sadovaya is not the safest). But in general, I do not encounter unpleasant comments on the streets, slaps/touches from unknown men. I would rate safety at 7/10, as I can't say I feel completely safe after dark and don't hold pepper spray in my hands just in case.
Posted: August 22, 2025St. Petersburg is generally a safe place. Standard safety precautions like not leaving your bag unattended and not getting into cars with strangers are enough. Streets and public transport are safe. Most people don't speak foreign languages but will be happy to help.
Posted: August 19, 2025I stayed at Kino Hostel. We took the separate room for 2p. I felt safe. From the centre it’s more dirty but overall I loved it. The museums are must have to go to! But you need hours to see all of the paintings! Prepare comfortable shoes!
