Is Belgium safe for solo female travellers?

Belgium is generally safe for solo female travellers. The country is known for its low crime rate and friendly locals, and the cities are well-lit and easy to navigate. Women should take the same precautions as they would in any other country, such as avoiding dark alleys and being aware of their surroundings. Additionally, Belgium has a good public transportation system, making it easy to get around without having to worry about safety.

Solo travel experience

I traveled to Belgium for 5 days. Visited Brussels, Bruges, and Ghent. It was simply magical. I highly recommend Belgium as it is safe, central to so many places in Europe, and since it is such a small country, it's easy to get around.

Solo travel experience

I had an amazing time in Brussels and did not encounter any safety issues, despite reading some negative experiences from others. I even wandered around at night taking photos. Gent is absolutely stunning and it captured a special place in my heart. As for Bruges, it is undeniably beautiful, although it can be quite touristy which is not usually my preference, but still worth a visit.

Solo travel experience

Itinerary: Ghent (1 Day) Brugge (1 Day) Brussels (2 Days) Safety: I felt very safe all the time. Recommendations: Ghent is relatively undiscovered and a college town as well. Bruges is mostly tourism.

Safety tips for solo female travellers in Belgium

Belgium can be a safe country for solo female travelers, but it's still important to take some precautions to ensure your safety. Here are some safety tips for solo female travelers in Belgium:

  1. As a solo female traveller, it is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to people around you and be aware of any suspicious activity.

Stay in well-lit areas: When travelling alone, it is important to stay in well-lit areas, especially at night. This will help to reduce the risk of becoming a target for crime.

  1. Carrying large amounts of cash can make you a target for theft. It is best to use a credit or debit card when travelling in Belgium.

  2. Avoid displaying expensive items such as jewellery or electronics, as this can make you a target for theft.

  3. It is important to be aware of your drink at all times when travelling alone. Do not accept drinks from strangers, as this can put you at risk of being drugged.

  4. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and leave the situation.

  5. Before travelling to a new area, it is important to research the area and become familiar with the local customs and laws.

  6. Make sure to stay in contact with family and friends while travelling. Let them know where you are and when you plan to return.

  7. Carrying a personal alarm can be a great way to alert people if you are in danger.

  8. Learning some basic phrases in the local language can be helpful in case of an emergency.

About Me

Hi! I come originally from Spain but I've worked and lived abroad for the past 25 years. Since 2016 I've changed career paths to me more aligned with my values. I no longer work as a consultant in a big company, instead I accompany women throughout their entire motherhood (including birth). I'm also a qualified massage therapist and I'm fascinated by creating significant human interactions... Having a cup of coffee and a chat with a good friend or even a total stranger can save lives ❤️‍🔥
