If you are in Cancun, try to go swim in some cenotes ( sunken caves with beautiful clear and cold water). There are many in the area. Also I would recommend a trip to Chichen itza ( Mayan pyramid). In Tulum, there is a whole Mayan city. Very interesting. I stayed in Tulum, it’s about 90 minutes by car from Cancun- it’s the most beautiful place and the hotel villas on the beach were all amazing. I felt very safe in the tourist areas but I would not recommend going into the other neighborhoods especially if you are a solo female traveler. ( I did because I am very curious- I saw terrible poverty, dirt and lots of garbage on the streets. ) Mexico is amazing and very colorful. I am going back very soon.

I traveled solo to Mexico and felt super safe. The metro is great and the have female only sections. And there's loads female cops around too if you ever need to report something. I was in Mecico City, Oaxaca, Teotihicuan and Tepoztlan. I felt pretty safe traveling solo, living in hostels, hitting up museums all the while speaking broken spanish.

One tip for Mexico- drink bottled water only- even to brush your teeth. Travelers often get diarrhea otherwise. Eat all the local food- tacos pastor is a favorite. People mostly speak enough English in Cancun due to all the USA tourists. Crime is only a problem if you’re out late in non tourist places, same as every other major city in the world. Many great places to stay.
