Is Taiwan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Taiwan is generally considered very safe for solo female travelers. The crime rate is pretty low, particularly against tourists. Public transportation is reliable and convenient, including late at night, and it's not uncommon for women to also be out alone. The locals are typically helpful and respectful, so you can expect to feel comfortable while traveling around. However, like any global cities, it is always important to take basic precautions, such as not wandering into less populated areas late at night.

How safe is Taiwan?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Taiwan is generally considered safe for solo female travelers even at night. Cities are well-lit, with busy streets full of locals and tourists. Public transportation is reliable, and crime rates are low. However, like anywhere else in the world, exercising standard precautions such as not venturing into less crowded or dimly lit areas at night is recommended.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Taiwan's public transportation is known for its excellent safety and efficiency. From High-Speed Rail to the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), buses, and taxis, all modes of public transport are reliable and widely used by locals and tourists alike. The stations and vehicles are clean and well-maintained, plus, most have security features like cameras and regular police presence. The signage and announcements in English also make it easy to navigate. Women traveling alone, even late at night, generally feel safe when using public transportation in Taiwan.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Very low

Taiwan is generally a safe country for solo female travelers. The locals are known for their politeness and respect towards others. Street harassment or catcalling is a rare occurrence, and it's highly unlikely that you will face any during your trip. Still, it’s always important to stay alert and cautious, as with any place you travel to.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Taiwan is a relatively safe country with low crime rates. Petty crimes such as theft or pickpocketing do occur, albeit infrequently, often in crowded places like markets or public transportation. However, local law enforcement is vigilant, and measures are often in place to deter such activities, therefore, the risk of encountering such situations remains low.
Tap water:

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Taiwan is usually treated and is technically safe to drink. However, an older pipeline system in some areas may affect water quality. Therefore, it's generally advised to boil tap water before drinking, especially in rural areas. Most locals drink boiled or bottled water. Many hotels provide complimentary bottled water, as do most restaurants. There are also plenty of convenient stores where you can buy fresh bottled water very easily.

It's very safe in Taiwan. As a backpacker who was in Southeast Asia, Taiwan is considered more expensive and is comparable to the cost one would incur in Singapore. As there are many delicious street food in Taiwan, it's good to make friends and have people to share the food together! Hostels in Taiwan are more expensive on the weekends as the locals are also traveling within their country. Good to book in advance if you're moving cities over the weekend.

Taiwan is a very safe country for female travellers. It was super simple to solo travel because the trains and bus make it easy to get around and people are helpful. I recommend visiting taipei, juifen, sun moon lake and hualien. The nature is beyond stunning here.

Solo travel experience

Taipei was incredibly safe, the people are very friendly and willing to help! There were a variety of activities, including hiking, local street markets and specialty coffee places. It was relatively affordable (especially the food) and I recommend staying at a hostel called Star Hostel Taipei East, which was clean and comfortable.

Solo travel experience

One of the safest countries with some of the kindest people in the world. It feels safe to walk on the streets because someone will immediately approach and ask how they can help. Lovely people, interested in the world, and conversation, and ready to help however they can. It makes you want to go back there.

Solo travel experience

I studied abroad in Taiwan and fell in love with the place. I can easily say that it is my favorite place in the world. The culinary culture is amazing (night markets are a must), it is very safe there, everyone is so friendly, and the diversity of landscapes (city, rainforests, beaches, mountains, etc.) is impressive. Taipei is an incredible city - it's very easy to get lost in its alleys.

Amazing places to visit, with temples everywhere and not that famous for most of the people. It feels special to be there and not being surrounded by tourists! I'll recommande it 100%, the safety there is non-comparable to any other country (as a solo girl traveler I know what I'm talking about :))

Taiwan is the top 10 safety country in the world I think. You don’t need to worry about anyone will hurt you , or other bad things will happen. Most of the Taiwanese are really friendly to everyone, especially to the foreigners who are traveling in Taiwan. So if you have some problems during the trip, you can ask any one beside you, even though they don’t have good English speaking skills, they will still try to help you.

I consider Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world! People in cafes even leave their laptops on the table when they go to the toilet! If you enjoy night life, we have night market, bars, and all kinds of restaurants still open after midnight.

Solo travel experience

I travelled all around the island, half of it by public transportation, and half bu hitchhiking. It was such an amazing experience! People are very nice and helped us a lot in many ways. Food and transportation aren't that expensive, but accommodation can be. I was hosted a couple of times, camped outside and stayed in hostels. If you decide to stay in a hostel/hotel, you better book in advance, at least a day prior. Taiwanese are pragmatic and organized people, and would be too surprised or feel uncomfortable if you suddenly look for an accommodation. For transportation, it's very easy. Just buy the Easy card and use for buses, trains, and subway!

Family travel experience

Spend 8 days in Taiwan with family. We enjoyed it overall. Took a road-trip to Taroko and Sun Moon Lake and there are lots more to see. Taipei is vibrant with lots of sights and things to do too as a family with elderlies and small kids.
