Safety:Safe

Philadelphia, like many other large cities in the USA, has a mixed safety record. It's safe to move in tourist areas during the day but some neighborhoods are advisable to avoid especially at night. Always be aware of your surroundings, use well-traveled streets, and use common precautions that you would in any other large city.

Transport:Easy

Philadelphia is quite navigable for travelers. The city layout is gridlike, making it easy to understand, and there is a range of public transportation options available, including buses, trains and trolleys. Walking or biking are also common modes of transport, particularly in the more historic districts. Safety-wise, sticking to well-populated areas is advised, as with any major city. However, some outskirts of the city can be challenging to access without a car. Language barriers are not an issue as English is widely spoken.

Things to do:Interesting

Philadelphia is rich in American history and culture. You could spend an entire day roaming the vast halls of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you're more into nature, visit the Philadelphia Magic Gardens or the Fairmount Park. Foodies will love trying the iconic Philadelphia cheesesteak. The city also offers numerous shopping opportunities from high-end boutiques to charming vintage stores.

Food:Above average

Philadelphia offers a wealth of culinary delights. Beyond the city's signature cheesesteaks, the food scene is a treasure trove of international cuisines from Italian to Middle Eastern, enhancing its diversity. Various go-to food trucks, markets, and upscale venues showcasing experimental dishes provide a wide range. The city has also increasingly embraced vegan and vegetarian food spots. However, while you can find high-end dining, Philadelphia's foods scene is more about comfort, and culinary elegance might be a bit lacking.

Budget:Moderate

Philadelphia is relatively budget-friendly for travelers. Accommodation can be found at varying price levels, though budget options are available. The city has plenty of low-cost and free attractions such as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. You can also enjoy affordable meals at local markets and eateries. However, some popular attractions and high-end dining can increase your overall expenses.

Is Philadelphia worth visiting?

Group travel experience

I traveled with two of my friends to Philadelphia last year And it was the first time we did couch surfing And some of the places we went to weren’t that safe but we did not had any bad encounters Since we did couch surfing (and the host was very generous) we did not really have to paid for food I will say that it’s not a city with a lot activities but there’s some of the places and things we did : - got to celebrate St Patrick at a very nice pub (1116 Walnut St) - saw a show at the Wells Fargo Center (3601 S Broad St) - great pizza at OG Pizza (2500 Frankford Ave) - Cute Market : Reading Terminal Market (1136 Arch St) - Independence National Historical Park with the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell - and for The Rocky’s fan there’s a statue and the stairs (of the Philadelphia Museum of Art ; 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway)

Solo travel experience

I spent a couple of weeks in Philadelphia during covid. I found the people incredibly friendly, even though we were all keeping our distance. I biked around the city using Indego bikes, which are super affordable by the hour. My favorite Italian food is in Philly.
