Solo Female Travel in Republic of Serbia

Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, Southern Europe, the Republic of Serbia is a destination that offers travelers a unique blend of East and West, with its rich historical past and captivating modern culture. Serbia is known for its diverse architecture, ranging from Byzantine style to Brutalist structures, signifying different eras it has passed through. The country boasts numerous medieval monasteries, symbolizing its Orthodox Christian traditions, like those you can find on the Unesco-listed Fruska Gora mountain. Belgrade, its vibrant capital, buzzes with an exciting nightlife, attracting party-goers around the globe. Serbian cuisine is another major draw with mouthwatering dishes such as Pljeskavica (Serbian burger) and Cevapi (grilled dish of minced meat). Outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in skiing at Kopaonik or enjoy hiking trails of Tara National Park. Despite the tumultuous past, Serbia is a warm and welcoming country with a thriving art scene and friendly locals, making it a destination worth exploring.

Safety:Safe

The Republic of Serbia is generally a safe country for solo female travelers. Crime rates are moderate and incidents directly affecting tourists are uncommon. It's important to follow standard safety measures such as avoiding lonely and dark places, especially during the night. Public transportation is reliable but it's better to use registered taxi companies for travel. Serbian people are known for their hospitality towards tourists, however, as a solo female traveler, you should exercise normal safeguards against unwanted attention.

Transport:Moderate

The Republic of Serbia offers moderately convenient transportation options. Major cities like Belgrade have efficient public transport systems including buses, trams, and taxis. However, some rural areas can be hard to reach, especially if you don't speak Serbian. Additionally, while Serbian society is generally welcoming, women traveling solo might face some difficulties and cultural differences, particularly in more traditional areas. Still, most locals are helpful and ready to offer assistance, making navigation manageable with sufficient planning.

Things to do:Interesting

Serbia represents a remarkable mix of diverse cultures, religions, and lifestyles. The history is incredibly rich, with many relics and landmarks to explore, ranging from ancient Roman sites in Viminacium, medieval monasteries, to Ottoman-era fortresses. The capital, Belgrade, is full of energy, with twentieth-century architecture, charming quarters like Skadarlija (Bohemian quarter), and bustling nightlife. Outdoor enthusiasts would love Tara and Kopaonik National Park for hiking, bird watching, and winter sports. The Danube River's cruising journey also offers picturesque views. The hospitality of locals, as well as the country's unique culinary scene, add to the appeal.

Food:Above average

The food in Serbia is an exotic blend of diverse cultures and influences. It offers a fantastic variety with dishes from hearty meat-based meals to a wide range of vegetarian options. Traditional dishes are tasty and filling, often featuring fresh, local produce and a lovely mix of flavors and spices. Street food is also charming with an option for everyone, from fast food to healthier choices. A staple bakery item is the 'Burek', a delicious cheesy pastry. Serbian sweets often include honey and nuts, such as the popular dessert 'Baklava'. However, the lack of variety of international cuisines and limited availability of vegan and gluten-free choices prevented the perfect score.

Budget:Affordable

The Republic of Serbia is considerably budget-friendly, especially when compared to Western European countries. Accommodation, food and transport are all affordable. The architecture, culture and history offer enriching experiences with little to no cost. However, heading to more touristic areas may slightly increase expenses.

Is Republic of Serbia worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I didn't enjoy my trip to Serbia, because people smoke cigarettes everywhere, even in restaurants and cafes. Because of this, while eating, I was forced to inhale smoke from other smokers.
