How safe is Tuscany?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Tuscany is generally safe at night. The region is well-traveled and police presence is evident. Even in the small hours, you'll find people out and about, especially in the summer months. However, as with any destination, it's still important to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings, particularly if you're walking alone.
Public transportation:

Tuscany's public transportation is generally safe for solo female travelers. The buses, trams, and trains are well maintained, frequent, and monitored. It's advisable to keep an eye on your belongings at all times, especially in crowded areas, as pick-pocketing can occur. Travelling in daylight and avoiding empty compartments can further enhance safety. Most locals are helpful should you need assistance.
Street harassment:

While in Tuscany, you may occasionally come across some mild street harassment like catcalling, especially in busier tourist areas. However, the frequency and intensity of such experiences tend to be low. Generally speaking, locals are warm, friendly, and respectful. You should still exercise the usual precautions when traveling, like avoiding poorly lit or deserted places at night.
Petty crimes:

Tuscany is generally considered safe with a low level of petty crimes. However, as a traveler, watchfulness is always important. Also, remember that incidents like these are not confined to the bigger cities but can occur in smaller towns too. Therefore, always keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings.

Solo travel

Tuscany is fantastic. We bumped into a citrus festival in one of the small cities...๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š Also, Florence is unbelievable. I couldn't stop staring at the cathedral. The Italian food is incredible and not just the pizzas. It's worth trying the pastas, pestos, olive oils, cheeses, and fruits as well. It was exremely expensive for me, but it woth every penny. In some cities you have to be aware about the pickpocketers specially in crowded places. But other than that I couldn't recomend it enough.

Group travel

I cycled from Florence to Pisa with Intrepid in September 2023 and it was a great trip. I loved visiting the small towns in Tuscany - the food was some of the best I had in Italy. The people in the smaller towns were lovely - a lot more welcoming than in the bigger cities. While some of the hills were challenging, the support van was helpful. I would recommend doing this tour whole heartedly. I felt very safe and comfortable no matter where we were and no matter the time of day. It was under CAD3,000 thanks to a sale and you could pay for some extra excursions. Some of the accommodation wasnโ€™t the best but it was passable.
