Solo Female Travel in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, the vibrant bustling capital of Cambodia, is located in the south-central region of the country and straddles the banks of the mighty Mekong River. Known for its rich history, it's a city that amalgamates French colonial architecture with major landmarks such as the opulent Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum - which houses comprehensive collections of Khmer artwork. This city is also remembered for its darker past marked by the reign of the Khmer Rouge, with the chilling reminders such as the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. Amidst this history, Phnom Penh has evolved to feature a bustling, rapidly changing café scene, dynamic nightlife and a diverse food culture that draw the attention of global travelers.

Safety:Safe

Phnom Penh, like any major city, has areas of both safety and concern. During the day, most areas are reasonably safe and people are usually friendly and helpful. Public areas and tourist spots like the Royal Palace, the Central Market, and Riverside are generally safe to explore. However, it is advisable to be cautious, especially at night, as petty theft and bag snatching can occur. Use trusted taxi services or tuk-tuks arranged by your hotel if you are traveling after dark. Always keep your belongings secure and avoid flashing expensive items. It’s essential always to trust your instincts and establish some local contacts if possible.

Transport:Moderate

Phnom Penh is moderately easy to navigate. Street names are fairly marked and there are enough English signs. However, heavy traffic can sometimes lead to confusion and delay. You also need some time to get accustomed to the local transportation methods. Be cautious while negotiating prices for taxi rides. Public transportation is limited, most people rely on private transport, like tuk-tuks, cyclos and taxis.

Things to do:Moderate

Phnom Penh, being the bustling capital of Cambodia, offers a good variety of activities and places of interest. You can spend time exploring its rich history at places such as the Royal Palace and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. It's also known for its vibrant street food scene and the beautiful riverfront promenade. However, compared to other Southeast Asian cities, one may find the options comparatively limited.

Food:Above average

Phnom Penh offers a great variety of food both in terms of local Cambodian cuisine and international dishes. Local street food is flavorful and affordable, with options including staples like amok curry and kuy teav. On the other hand, quality international offerings spread around the city provide diverse choices as well, such as Italian, French, and Japanese food, although at a slightly premium price. Vegetarian and vegan options are also starting to become more prevalent.

Budget:Affordable

Phnom Penh is generally quite budget-friendly. Accommodation can be found at a low cost, both for budget hostels and more upmarket hotels. Local food is delicious, diverse, and surprisingly cheap. Public transportation is also affordable, although not as widespread or efficient as in some other cities. The major expenses can be sightseeing and shopping. But overall, compared to many other cities, your money goes a long way in Phnom Penh.

Solo travel experience

It was an amazing solo travel. Food and transport doesn't hurt the bank a lot as the food is pretty cheap yet superb taste! Booking a TukTuk via Grab is very convenient and also cheap. I stayed at a RS II Guesthouse and the view of the Royal Palace at the balcony is just wow... then you have the river on your left...also inexpensive... Make sure to visit the Killing Fields to know their deep history.(Prepare your tissues!) Overall, Phnom Penh is a nice place for solo or group travelling and you can enjoy comfort and convenient without spending too much.

Solo travel experience

I loved the people I met there, but I did not feel safe. Everyone was really nice and I regret that crime is so high there. Someone stole my phone straight from my hand. I would recommend not going out in the evening and having a leash or something on your phone. Or just use a paper map and never pull out your phone. You should also have a shoulder bag and wear a jacket on it. Keep your passport and extra cards/cash in a safe in your hotel room. Just carry a little cash and one card with you.
