Is Phnom Penh Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Phnom Penh, like any major city, has areas of both safety and concern. During the day, most areas are reasonably safe and people are usually friendly and helpful. Public areas and tourist spots like the Royal Palace, the Central Market, and Riverside are generally safe to explore. However, it is advisable to be cautious, especially at night, as petty theft and bag snatching can occur. Use trusted taxi services or tuk-tuks arranged by your hotel if you are traveling after dark. Always keep your belongings secure and avoid flashing expensive items. It’s essential always to trust your instincts and establish some local contacts if possible.

How safe is Phnom Penh?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Phnom Penh, similar to many capital cities around the world, can be a mixed bag when it comes to safety at night, especially for solo female travelers. While the city has rich cultural heritage and vibrant scenes, there might be areas that are less lit and more deserted after dark which is better to avoid. It is generally safe in the well-lit and busy areas, with locals and tourists enjoying the night markets, riverside areas, and restaurants. However, it's always best to remain aware of your surroundings and use common sense. Also, consider using reliable taxi services rather than walking alone at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Phnom Penh's public transportation system mainly consists of three-wheeled auto-rickshaws called tuktuks and taxi cabs. Generally, they are safe to use, although some caution is needed mainly due to frequent traffic chaos. Frequent travelers advise negotiating fares upfront as drivers do not typically use meters. There have been minor instances of pickpocketing or bag snatching in crowded places. Common advice is to avoid late-night travel unless absolutely necessary.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Phnom Penh, majority of the public places are considerably safe and women in general report lower cases of street harassment. However, crowed areas like markets and certain bar streets late at night can be exceptions. As a precaution, it is advisable to stay neatly dressed, avoid late night activities in secluded areas, and be firm when saying no. Stick to the lit streets at night and avoid isolated, less-populated areas. Furthermore, be cautious while hiring tuk-t or moto-taxi drivers especially at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Phnom Penh, like any other large city, has its share of petty crimes. Pickpocketing and bag snatching are common, particularly in crowded places and tourist hotspots. However, vigilance and common-sense precautions should ensure a safe visit to this beautiful and vibrant city.

Solo travel

I felt quite safe in Phnom Phen, however I would say, keep track of your belongings. I know several people who got their phone stolen there. Either by a person passing by (on a motorbike) or even a tuk tuk driver. Besides that everything was fine. There is however not much to do and if you don't have too much time I would suggest skipping this town in favour of other places.

Solo travel

It was an amazing solo travel. Food and transport doesn't hurt the bank a lot as the food is pretty cheap yet superb taste! Booking a TukTuk via Grab is very convenient and also cheap. I stayed at a RS II Guesthouse and the view of the Royal Palace at the balcony is just wow... then you have the river on your left...also inexpensive... Make sure to visit the Killing Fields to know their deep history.(Prepare your tissues!) Overall, Phnom Penh is a nice place for solo or group travelling and you can enjoy comfort and convenient without spending too much.

Solo travel

I loved the people I met there, but I did not feel safe. Everyone was really nice and I regret that crime is so high there. Someone stole my phone straight from my hand. I would recommend not going out in the evening and having a leash or something on your phone. Or just use a paper map and never pull out your phone. You should also have a shoulder bag and wear a jacket on it. Keep your passport and extra cards/cash in a safe in your hotel room. Just carry a little cash and one card with you.
