Is Fortaleza Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

As a solo female traveler in Fortaleza, exercise caution due to cases of street crime such as handbag snatching. Various neighborhoods are also advised to be avoided after dark. Taxis are recommended over public transport, especially at night. Use a reputable taxi company or Uber. Be vigilant on the beach and when carrying valuables around the city. Despite the concerns, many travelers have peaceful stays when precautions are taken.

How safe is Fortaleza?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Like many large cities, Fortaleza has areas that are more secure than others. However, walking alone at night in Fortaleza is generally not recommended as the city suffers from high levels of petty and violent crime. Stay in well-lit areas, avoid empty streets, and always take a licensed taxi or use a trusted ride-sharing app if you need to travel at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Fortaleza can be quite unpredictable. Though buses are frequently used by locals and tourists alike, instances of petty crime such as pickpocketing or robberies are not uncommon, particularly in crowded areas. It is advisable not to flaunt valuable items and always stay aware of your surroundings. However, most journeys go without issue and this shouldn't discourage usage.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

Fortaleza is known for its vibrant culture and beautiful beaches, but it is also a city where women may experience a higher level of street harassment compared to some other destinations. Catcalling, unwanted comments, and even minor physical contact like touching or grabbing, are unfortunately not uncommon in crowded places, especially at night. Despite these factors, many female travelers still enjoy the city's many attractions safely. It's important to always remain aware of your surroundings, avoid walking alone at night whenever possible, and remember that any form of harassment is not a reflection on you, but rather on those perpetrating it.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

While Fortaleza is a vibrant city renowned for its beautiful beaches, it does unfortunately see a higher measure of petty crime compared to some other parts of Brazil. Theft and pickpocketing are the most common issues, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation. Always stay alert and keep your personal belongings close and secure to minimize the risk.

Is Fortaleza safe for women?

You need to be careful. After all, no where is 100% safe for women. I wouldn't recommend walking alone after dark (not on foot), ubers are usually safe, and during the day, public transportation is also a good option. But always keep an eye out for suspicious men to avoid any unwanted interaction or mugs. Generally, I don't worry much as local, but remember to always be careful.

It depends of every region. During the day I feel safe, but during the night it depends how far or poor places you are. But mostly it’s a safe place. I never been robbed in my life and I always take care about myself a lot!
