Safety at night:

Safety at night:Very safe

Hasselt in Belgium is generally a safe city even at night. Locals are super friendly and willing to help, and the city has low crime rates. Public areas are adequately lit, and public transport runs reliably even in the late hours. However, like anywhere else, it is important to always stay alert and adhere to basic safety rules, like staying in well-lit areas and avoiding deserted streets.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Hasselt is considered to be very safe. Buses and trains maintain a high standard of cleanliness and order. Services are efficient, punctual, and reliable which adds to the overall sense of safety. Criminal incidents are extremely uncommon on public transit. More so, locals and transportation staff are generally helpful and willing to offer advice or assistance if necessary. However, as in any place, being aware of your surroundings and keeping your belongings close to you is always a good practice.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Hasselt generally has a safe and respectful environment. Although you might occasionally encounter some unwanted attention, most of the local people are accustomed to tourists and foreigners. However, always remember that no place is completely free from harassment, so keep practicing standard precautions for safety.
Petty crimes:

Hasselt is a very safe city. Of course you always have to be aware of your surroundings, and maybe some areas can be slightly less safe than others, but in general Hasselt is one of the safest cities in Belgium. It’s not a big city like Antwerp or Brussels, and there aren’t as many tourists. The crime rate is also very low and most people are friendly and helpful. Because it’s a small and calm city, the streets can be quite empty and dark when you’re walking alone at night, but I’ve never experienced harassment or felt unsafe.

Hasselt is a small city that is clean, calm and very safe. I feel completely safe as a young woman of 25. Ofcourse you occasionally bump in to men going out or partying, but I have had anyone even talk to me that I did not want to in 5 years of living these.

About Me

I am Wendy, a 51 years old teacher, living in Hasselt (Belgium), a small city at 1h from Antwerp, Brussels … After 23 years marriage I’m single again and I have decided to travel the world. I have never travelled alone so it will soon be my first experience. It scares me a bit but in the meantime I’m looking forward to meet new people, other cultures and habits and rediscover ‘myself’. I have two ‘kids’ of 19 and 23 years old who support my dream of traveling solo a few months. So looking forward to this new adventure in my life!
