Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Tallinn generally has a low crime rate and its streets are often safe at night. It's well-lit and has visible police presence. However, caution is always advised, especially in quieter, less touristy areas. Make sure to avoid unlit streets and parks after dark and always keep your belongings close to you.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Tallinn is generally very safe for solo female travelers. The public transit system, which includes trams, buses and trolleys, is well-maintained and frequently used by locals and visitors alike. The stations and vehicles are clean and well-lit, and security measures are in place. The locals are generally respectful and thefts are rare. However, be alert like in any other city about your surroundings, particularly at night, and keep your personal belongings close to you.

Street harassment:Very low

Tallinn is generally seen as a very safe city for solo female travelers. Instances of street harassment are rare, as locals are respectful and people are mindful of personal space. However, like anywhere else, it's always important to maintain standard safety precautions.

Petty crimes:Low

Tallinn overall maintains a low to moderate level of petty crime. While incidents such as pickpocketing, purse snatching, or minor burglaries may occur, particularly in tourist-heavy areas and crowded public transport, they are not highly prevalent. The Old Town in Tallinn, though a major tourist attraction, is relatively safe, but it's always essential to stay vigilant. A common precautionary practice is to keep your belongings secure and stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places or during the nightlife. On the whole, Tallinn is considered one of the safer European cities regarding petty crimes.

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Tallinn is of high quality and safe to drink. It has been tested regularly and complies with various health standards. You can safely drink it straight from the tap without needing to boil it first or use a water purification tablet. It's not only safe, but it's also a budget-friendly and eco-friendly option. Just make sure to have a refillable water bottle with you.

When we arrive to Tallin, it was nighttime. Me and two of my friends could walk through the street at 11 p.m. It makes us feel safe. It was really freezing outside. We went first of march. You need clothes that keep you warm. Also, I tried a few traditional dishes but i am not sure if they’re nice or overrated. People are not hospitable and smile faced. It was a frustrating situating for me. Moreover, I love the castle and the viewing point of the city.

Solo travel experience

Hey! I was on my business trip in Tallinn and first I was with my colleagues but I stayed there for extra 4 days and was absolutely alone. I visited some museums and parks, it was nice. I really loved the exhibition at Fotografiska. Since I was single at that time I met one guy on tinder, he was really nice, my danish friend organised a meeting with his danish friend and one Italian just came to me when I was going on a stroll so I was not that lonely anymore. I felt quite safe there. In general, I have pretty good impressions of that trip

Beautiful city - very underrated! I felt so safe exploring on my own and stayed in a really budget friendly hostel in the city centre called Viru Backpackers Hostel! Definitely head up to the viewpoint overlooking the city, I went in February and it began snowing which made it even more beautiful

Solo travel experience

Travel plan: I spent 2 days in Tallinn. Things to do: - Old Town (also known as Vanalinn) - this is the oldest part of Tallinn - St. Nicholas' Church (also known as Niguliste kirik) - Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - Kohtuotsa viewing platform - Kadriorg Art Museum - Lühikese jala värav Safety: I always felt very safe on the streets in the city centre. Accommodation: I had a wonderful stay at the Old Town Alur hostel, it was clean and the staff were helpful and friendly, and it's centrally located as well. Recommendations: Tallinn is a beautiful city. I would go back there again. The ferry crossing to Helsinki is also cool.

Is Tallinn safe for women?

In my experience Tallinn is mostly a safe city. Definitely very safe and chill during the day, but to be extra sure, I wouldn’t go wondering around in certain sketchy looking neighborhoods in the dark.

Tallinn was perfect But I highly recommend going there in warm weather because in February the place was so cold. I like the atmosphere a lot!!! Especially old town was vivid and there were a lot of good cafes and restaurants.

Solo travel experience

I fell in love with this city. I stayed in the unique Kalamaja district, in one of the local wooden houses (Kalamaja means "fish house", its roots are in the fishing district, but today it's rather hipster and artistic). The museums in the city center are quite nice, but you can quickly explore them. I recommend visiting the NUKU museum, which presents dolls and puppets from the local puppet theatre. A place that presents really good works of art is Fotografiska, where you can also find delicious cinnamon buns. It is worth going to the Kalamaja Museum, which was created by the local community and preserves their stories. Be sure to go to the sea, even towards Linnahall. These beaches are raw and extraordinary.

About Me

I am very enthusiastic about travelling, keen to learn about different cultures and every now and then travel solo. However, travelling solo brings me some uneasyness about safety - at least when travelling outside of Europe or some parts of Asia. Sharing knowledge and getting support from like-minded women would be great 🙂
