Is Israel Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Israel is generally safe for solo female travelers. It is a progressive country with respectful locals and a good public transportation system. However, safety can slightly fluctuate depending on the political situation. Israel has strict security measures that can sometimes be intimidating, particularly at borders and airports, but these measures are in place for everyone’s safety. Exercise common sense and situational awareness just as you would in any other country. Consider travel in groups or tours if you are unsure or uncomfortable.

Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Israel is a reasonably safe country for solo female travelers, especially in well-populated areas. However, concerns grow when venturing alone at night. Like any other place, it's always advisable to stay in well-lit, busy areas and avoid deserted streets to ensure personal safety. Although statistically, crime rates are quite low, it's best to prioritize personal safety and remain cautious, as circumstances can vary.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Israel, including buses, trains and shared taxis, is generally reliable and safe. Particularly in the cities, transport systems are frequently used by a large cross-section of the public, including many solo female travelers. However, it's also important to note that during peak hours, they can get very crowded, and pickpocketing incidents, while rare, do occur. Moreover, security precautions on public transportation are high due to the country's political situation. Overall, with a bit of vigilance, you can safely navigate Israel using public transportation.

Street harassment:Low

In Israel, street harassment is generally low. Many local women and tourists alike move around without experiencing any form of harassment. However, it's always important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, as isolated incidents can occur anywhere. The people are typically friendly and respectful towards women. The police and locals are usually helpful if you need assistance. Cultural diversity is high, and respect for women is ingrained in many societal norms.

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Israel, although not immune to petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, they are relatively lower compared to some other countries. However, tourists, especially those traveling alone, can be an attractive target. It's common in tourist areas and in crowded places like markets and public transportation. Therefore, it's recommended to keep your belongings secure, avoid displaying valuable possessions, and remain vigilant at all times.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Israel is generally considered safe to drink and it goes through modern water treatment processes. However, some may experience mild stomach discomfort initially due to differences in water composition. Travelers are recommended to gradually introduce tap water into their system or opt for bottled water, especially when travelling to desert or rural areas.

Israel was amazing. In every single way. I have never in my life felt safer and statistics back me up. I would be willing to argue that Israel is the safest place in the world for solo women. Although I went with a group of people, many times I would walk at night either alone or with 1-3 other women around my age (18-20) and sometimes even intoxicated and we never once felt in danger from Tel Aviv to Tiberius. Abraham hostels are a super high quality line of hostels and the one in Tel Aviv is the best I’ve stayed at. It has tours, live music, clean rooms/bathrooms and so incredibly safe and inclusive. I cannot recommend Israel enough and I am counting the seconds until I go back. It is so diverse, beautiful and breathtaking.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone through Israel and Palestine in January of this year. The only threat may be the current state of conflict, otherwise, it is an extremely safe and pleasant country. The climate varies depending on the city - Tel Aviv is very open, Jerusalem is diverse and somewhat more conservative, Haifa is student-oriented, and Tiberias is strongly Jewish and has a festive atmosphere. It's really worth visiting Israel.

Solo travel experience

I was alone in January of this year for 10 days. I visited Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. I got to all these places by public transport, without any problems. I plan to return and see more, because I am still hungry for new experiences. It's an incredibly interesting country and in my opinion, safe. It's wonderful to be in Jerusalem during Shabbat and to visit Yad Vashem, it's an unforgettable experience.

Solo travel experience

I lived and traveled there alone for about a year. So many things to see and do. There are many cities and plenty of beautiful nature to discover. It's worth noting that it has such vast territory, from desert in the south to lush greenery in the north. Israel is very safe for solo travelers.

Solo travel experience

Israel was one of the best trips I've ever done. There are so many soldiers everywhere (unfortunately), so I never felt unsafe. I recommend Jerusalem and Tel Aviv (spend a few days in each) and, of course, the West Bank (I visited Bethlehem, Jericho, Hebron, Ramallah and the baptism site). The food is delicious. There's so much to see, from ancient Roman remnants, through Christian sights, Palestinian culture, Holocaust Museum and so on. It's really a gem. And the color of the sea is amazing.

Solo travel experience

Israel is a very safe country. I bought a Rav-Kav card (for public transport) there, but ultimately I walked everywhere. In Tel Aviv, I would advise not to walk at night, especially in the area near Hahagana train station and the central bus station. Nothing happened to me, but I really felt uncomfortable walking in the middle of the night. As for Jerusalem, if you want to visit the monuments, you should definitely dress appropriately. Otherwise, they are already used to tourists who wear shorts and tops. I have never been alone in Jerusalem, but I felt very safe there at night (I lived near the Yehuda Market).

Is Israel safe for women?

Sophia

Israel is a pretty safe county I would say, obviously there are many not so nice stories I heard from friends but I can tell you that if you don't go to the wrong times you would be fine, and although there are some catcalling here and there things like murder rape and kidnap happens in very few places and I don't know about them. There are rape stories but it usually isn't someone random on the street. What I would keep an eye on is terror, obviously right now there is a very high alert all through the country so it's less scary but you don't want to piss off the wrong people, but also don't think that the druzik and arabic villages in Israel aren't safe, most of them are and most of the people are nice and kind, just, I would keep an eye open while passing by, especially at night.

Solo travel experience

I just got back last week and had wonderful experiences. I loved travelling there alone as a woman, it was much easier than I anticipated both in Israel and in the Palestinian territories. It's really beautiful there. So much to see.

I was alone in Israel for two weeks and I loved it. I walked around the Jerusalem markets and the Old Town, and also went on trips to the Dead Sea and Galilee. I never felt uncomfortable or scared.
